Carol Perkins: The Old Flame

Previous Column: A Spoiled Woman

By Carol Perkins

For the past few years, I have been working on a new novel. It is actually going to be a series, called "The Old Flame."

In everyone's life there is someone, whether an elementary school crush or an actual relationship/engagement that didn't work out but hasn't been forgotten. Most of us remember all of our "old" boyfriends/crushes and the times we pined away thinking about them. Some returned the attention, and some did not. We girls wrote their names on our notebooks and sent messages through our friends. Those were fun times.

My first boyfriend was in the second grade. Cute little red-headed boy who moved away before the next year began and took my little heart with him.

State to partner with local officials to preserve important records

Counties can have birth, death and marriage certificates digitized for free under agreement

From Nickolas Oatley/Kim Saylor Brannock

Frankfort, KY -- On August 2, 2024, the Commonwealth of Kentucky announced it has partnered with FamilySearch to digitize and preserve tens of thousands of primary records, such as birth, death and marriage certificates that are currently on microfilm reels.

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) and volunteers from the Kentucky Genealogical Society (KYGS) are now reaching out to the state's county clerks, the official custodians of these records, to notify them of the opportunity to have their records digitized free of charge by FamilySearch. They can take advantage of this opportunity simply by advising KDLA that their records may be digitized using a records release form. In return, the clerks and KDLA will receive copies of the digitized records, and FamilySearch will post a copy on their free online database.

Salmon patties provide a light alternative to beef burgers

Light and versatile salmon patties pack a powerful nutritional punch and can be prepared and cooked in just a few minutes. There's no need to prep the salmon yourself, either. Wild-caught canned salmon works best, and provides the same heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids as a fresh fish at a budget-friendly price point and without the extra prep steps.

Served on a bun, salmon patties go well with a variety of condiments -- try mayonnaise (light or regular) flavored with Old Bay seasoning, crisp butter lettuce, and pickled onion.
