Tuesday was the first day of the Coach Deron Breeze basketball Camp sponsored by Adair County High School basketball.

The camp gives training to interested basketball players in grades Kindergarten-6th. This year's camp will last three days and is attended by 95 children, the largest number in Coach Breeze's tenure. This camp is just one of the many ways Adair County basketball is able to give back to the community.

Colin Harris completes internship with Congressman Comer

From Austin Hacker

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman James Comer (R-Ky.) recognized local students Allie Fort, Colin Harris, and Ella Lester for recently completing summer internships in his Washington, D.C. office. During their time in the nation's capital, Allie, Colin, and Ella answered constituent inquiries from Kentucky's First Congressional District, researched legislative issues, coordinated tours, and provided general office assistance.

"Allie, Collin, and Ella became indispensable in my Washington office this summer, and I want to thank them for their dedicated service to Kentucky's First Congressional District. Their work was crucial to helping me and my staff, as well as assisting so many Kentuckians who call our office seeking help from the federal government. This talented trio has a bright future ahead of them, and I look forward to seeing each of their endeavors and achievements," said Congressman Comer.

Colin Harris, a Taylor County native, is pursuing his undergraduate degree from Campbellsville University, where he is actively involved in his Theater Troupe and the Archery team.

"I am thankful for this internship being one of my first government setting experiences, and it has been so helpful in preparing for my Masters," said Mr. Harris.

Pertussis, whooping cough cases increasing across Kentucky

From Stephanie French/Brice Mitchell

Frankfort, KY - On July 17, 2024, state health officials alert Kentuckians that pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is increasing across the commonwealth. To date in 2024, Kentucky health officials have identified 130 cases of pertussis. Current case numbers indicate that the state is experiencing an elevated rate of infection not seen in Kentucky since 2016-2017 when 463 and 449 cases were reported, respectively.

"Anyone can get pertussis, though infants are at greatest risk for life-threatening illness," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH). "Fortunately, vaccinations are available to help prevent serious disease."

Whooping cough is a very contagious respiratory illness. Symptoms of whooping cough can vary for people based on their age and vaccination status, but typically begin with a runny or congested nose and mild coughing. After 1-2 weeks, the cough can progress to rapid, violent coughing fits that can cause the "whooping" sound, vomiting and labored breathing. Babies younger than one year old are at greatest risk of getting whooping cough and having severe complications from it. People with pre-existing health conditions that may be worsened by whooping cough are at high risk for developing a severe infection.

If you have been exposed to anyone with whooping cough or if you are having any whooping cough symptoms, go to your nearest clinic.
