Weather advisory: Prolonged heat wave all week

From Mike Keltner, Director
Adair Co. Emergency Management

June 17, 2024 - According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, we are just beginning what will be a prolonged period of hot temperatures.

This heat won't be overly intense but it WILL be persistent, with highs each day solidly in the 90s. The best chance for heat index values over 100 will be this afternoon, and again Friday and Saturday.

Those most likely to be impacted are people working outdoors, those without access to air conditioning, and other vulnerable populations.

No heat-related headlines are in effect, but if temperatures or humidity run just a little higher, we may need a Heat Advisory by the middle of the week.

Letter: note and donation to Shoebox writer

Elizabeth Glasgow writes to Carol Perkins:
(in care of Columbia Magazine where her articles appear weekly)
Dear Carol,

I am the granddaughter of Shirley and Frances Glasgow - long time residents of Milltown in Adair County.

Through this connection, I found Columbia Magazine and have enjoyed interesting articles and tidbits of local interest for many years, even since they have both passed on.

My grandmother spoke often of doing Christmas Shoeboxes through the Columbia United Methodist Church. Seeing your recent article about being contacted by a sister of a recipient of one of your boxes brought me a smile and a fond memory of my time in Milltown.

Please accept the enclosed contribution to this year's boxes and thanks for sharing on Columbia Magazine! Best, Elizabeth

Elizabeth, thank you for being part of the Columbia Magazine family and writing! We will deliver your donation to Carol personally. I went to church with your grandparents and am happy to have a chance to remember them. - LW

Letter Responds to: Carol Perkins: An email from Virginia. Readers might also enjoy the story of how Carol got started with the ministry: Shoebox attitude adjustment

From Trooper Jonathan Houk

Burkesville, KY - On the evening of June 12, 2024, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers observed Oscar Farley, age 32 of Burkesville, outside of his residence on Veterans Street in Burkesville. The Troopers knew Mr. Farley and were aware he had a warrant for his arrest. Mr. Farley attempted to flee into the residence upon seeing the Troopers however, they were able to apprehend him. While speaking with him, the Troopers observed Mr. Farley's small child in the residence in less than satisfactory living conditions. Mr. Farley was arrested for the probation violation warrant and left his child in the care of Dewey McCoy, age 41 of Burkesville.

Troopers left the residence and went to the Cumberland County Dispatch Center to turn over custody of Mr. Farley to a transportation officer. While there, Troopers saw a car approaching and stopped near them. Tamara McCoy, age 33 of Burkesville, exited the vehicle and approached the Troopers in an aggressive and disorderly manner while holding her small child. Troopers were able to safely secure the child, with a family members assistance, and placed Ms. McCoy under arrest. Both were lodged in the Adair County Detention Center.

Juneteenth a State Executive Branch holiday

The third annual Juneteenth black tie gala, organized by Latanya Bridgewater in Campbellsville, was enjoyed in a full house at Swan's Landing Saturday, June 15, 2024. Several outstanding people were honored during the celebration which included prizes, scholarship presentations and dancing after dinner. The story of Juneteenth follows in a release from Gov. Andy Beshear.

Frankfort, KY -- Gov. Andy Beshear declared Juneteenth - a day that commemorates African Americans' many contributions and long struggle for freedom, justice and equality - as a state Executive Branch holiday to give thanks in the commonwealth. He signed an executive order declaring that, beginning this year, each June 19 shall be observed in Kentucky as Juneteenth National Day of Freedom.

"Juneteenth is an important day for all Kentuckians to observe and honor the historic and continuing contributions of African Americans in making our commonwealth the place we love and call home," Gov. Beshear said. "My hope is that everyone embraces the spirit of emancipation and freedom that this day represents as we build a better Kentucky that welcomes everyone."
