Carol Perkins: Who was that?

Previous Column: When the lights go out

By Carol Perkins

I rushed out of one store at the mall and headed to another when a familiar face swept by me. I stopped and turned back, and she did the same.

"I haven't seen you forever," I said, and we hugged. During our exchange of pleasantries, I quickly recognized that this woman did not know me from Adam. She was looking for clues to discover the identity of the woman who seemed to know her so well.

"I'm her husband," the man walking beside her said.

I should have introduced myself at that moment, but I assumed she would do that. She couldn't because she was lost! I continued to talk about the time I visited their home.

Seeing through the Eyes of Others

The Kentucky Wilderness, Daniel Trabue (1760-1840), John Muir (1830-1914), and Marco Sioli, in 2024

By Phil Hanna

Twenty-five years after his February 1999 visit to Columbia, Marco Sioli, a professor of American history from Italy, returned to Columbia. On May 28th and 29th, 2024, he gave two talks: 1. Memory of the Wilderness: Daniel Trabue and the Frontier of Kentucky, at the Genealogy and History Center, and 2. From Transcendentalism to Environmentalism: John Muir in Kentucky, at the Trabue-Russell House. He also revisited the Anderson Cemetery where Daniel Trabue and his wife, Mary Haskins Trabue, are buried; the cemetery, now rehabilitated, restored, stones repaired and marked with a new sign.

Sioli's very first encounter with Adair County, came from his 1998 article, Huguenot Traditions in the Mountains of Kentucky: Daniel Trabue's Memories (Journal of American History). In that work, Sioli envisioned Kentucky through the eyes and writing of Daniel Trabue, who in his journal (1827), used words and phrases such as sublime, rivers, hills, spruce, pine ...everything looking new, as if entering into the garden of Eden. Trabue's grandfather had fled France in 1687 due to the persecution of Protestants. For Trabue, the wilderness of Kentucky represented freedom, danger, opportunity, and the possibility of life in a new world. Trabue's words were Sioli's first impressions of Kentucky.

Caregivers Thank You

By Diane R Wallace

The death of my mother, Joyce Youngs, only months from laying my sister, Carol Peasley to rest, has brought an unexpected onslaught of unexpected community support.

A special thank you to my friends and former co-workers from the Adair County Health Department (Rhonda, Cindy, Brooke, Pam and Melody); the Caregivers Support Group (Linda and Betty), my mothers best friend, Joyce Evans, who faithfully made regular visits with mom, Joy Miller who helped me maintain sanity; Janet Wright (Greensburg) who tended to mother to the very end; the staff at Bank of Columbia; Hosparus (Christy, Sarah, Robin, and Deanna). Also thank you for the many check-ins with text messages, phone calls and cards with whom I have shared my struggles and whom have also shared their own struggles with me.

My family, all rural New York transplants: brother-in-law (Ken Peasley), my father (Richard A. Youngs) sister (Carol Peasley, and now my mother (Joyce Youngs) are resting in peace here in Columbia, KY. I am so thankful for the compassion and friendship received from this community. God Bless All of You.

Letter: street light is back on in Columbia

A grateful Kathryn Burton says:
I want to thank you all very much for what you did for me - the utilities came and fixed the street light. Chris Bennett called in - they were here early Monday morning - I really appreciate what you've done and have a blessed week!"
Re: Street light needs replacing downtown

Columbia Magazine is proud of Kathryn who didn't give up and kept asking, and glad to have been able to share the dilemma with readers and help find answers. Thanks to Chris Bennett, Stuart Carman and JIM, who responded.
