ACRTA selects Ava Froedge contest winner

From Kim Goodin

The Adair County Retired Teachers Association announced that the District Essay Winner AARP/KRTA to Honor Grandparent of the Year essay contest winner is Ava Froedge of Columbia.

Ava is among thousands of Kentucky fifth graders participating in the annual essay competition. For the past 23 years, AARP Kentucky and Kentucky Retired Teachers Association (KTRA) have sponsored the statewide competition.

The competition is one way to pay tribute to the significant contributions of older Kentuckians shaping the lives and values of children across the Commonwealth. An increasing number of adults 50-plus are the primary caregivers to minors.

Grateful: Lance shares emergency and outcome

Lance Burton is sharing his story to let fans know he is healing, to say thanks, and also to let everyone know of a serious eye symptom to watch out for.

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 6am he had emergency eye surgery for a torn or detached retina. The surgery was completely successful and he says he is grateful to live in a country that has such great doctors and surgeons.

Lance writes, "My surgeon was Dr. Inder P Singal. He and his entire team were fantastic. It was an emergency surgery, because if it didn't happen quickly I would be blind in my right eye within a short period of time. That said, it was an out-patient procedure. I walked into the surgery center at 6:00am and walked out at 7:30am! I am now recuperating at home.

By Gerard Flanagan, lead writer and communications specialist,
Office of Marketing and Communications

During his sermon of dedication for Campbellsville University's new Center for Faith and Ministry, Dr. Robert Smith told a story of New Zealand mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, who hiked to the peak of Mount Everest in 1953.

And, upon reaching the mountain's 29,032-foot peak, the tallest in the world, Hillary buried a crucifix into the ground.

"It was a symbol saying in essence Christ is above all," Smith said in CU's Ransdell Chapel recently.
