Letter: Thistle control

Troy Grider writes:
I have had past problems on my farm with thistles due that the seeds are highly transmittable for miles. Even if a farmer treats their property, neighboring farms/land can produce the seeds which wind up on your farm. However, the broad leaf weed killer 2,4 d will knock them out dead.

Letter: Dealing with thistle

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Each year:
  1. Cut them off as low to the ground as reasonable prior to seeding.

  2. Immediately after cutting, drop a handful of salt on the top of the cut stem.
This is the Chattin Chowning method and it works without chemicals that may be damaging to the environment. Chattin always carried a 25 pound bag of salt on his bush hog and mowing machine.
