Congratulations to Sgt. Major Dan Kermeen Pam Kermeen of Columbia writes, "We would like to announce the promotion of our son Daniel Kermeen to Sgt. Major on April 15, 2024 in Okinawa, Japan." Pam says that after Dan graduated from Adair County High School, he "went to work at IMO and desperately wanted full-time with them. They kept putting him off so he went to Louisville and enlisted with the Marines. IMO offered him full-time the next day! The recruiter came to the house the day after Christmas in 2006 and the rest is history." Kermeen began his military career in late 2006 at Parris Island, South Carolina, and has steadily gained experience and responsibility from there, at bases in Missouri, Haiti, Korea, and Japan. In late 2023 First Sergeant Kermeen assumed the duties of Company First Sergeant for Truck Company, and he was soon after selected for promotion to Sergeant Major. In April 2024 he was promoted to his current rank and is set to assume the duties as Squadron Sergeant Major for Marine Air Support Squadron 2 in May 2024. Sergeant Major Kermeen's personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with (2) gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with (3) gold stars, and the Good Conduct Medal with (4) bronze stars. Reed & Coffey, Undertakers, 1898 By JIM Reed & Coffey, Undertakers, opened in Columbia the late winter of 1898, and the first ad for the business appeared in the March 2 edition of the Adair County News. The following week, the paper mentioned that "Reed & Coffey, who have just started in the undertaker's business, had the call for caskets last week. It takes them but a few minutes to have a burial case ready, neatly finished." The principals were Mr. Edgar (E.W.) Reed and Mr. Robert Graves (R.G.) Coffey. The ad imaged here ran for about 10 consecutive weeks; after that, no mention of the firm appeared until autumn of the following year. R.G. Coffey removed to Texas around the middle of October 1899 for health considerations and three weeks later, a one-sentence news item stated that "Messrs. Reed & Coffey, undertakers, have sold their stock of goods to Capt. W.W. Bradshaw and have gone out of business." (Mr. Bradshaw and Mr. J.B. Jones had opened an undertaking establishment in Columbia about 1896. In 1909, Mr. Bradshaw sold his interest in the firm to Mr. Jones, who continued in the business for another dozen years or so.) 2024-05-12 10:35:55 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Jim: History
