Gov. Beshear delivers State of the Commonwealth address From Crystal Staley/James Hatchett Frankfort, KY - On Jan. 3, 2024, less than a month after being sworn in for a second term, Gov. Andy Beshear delivered his annual State of the Commonwealth Address and said that "thanks to the strength of our people and our red-hot economy, the state of our commonwealth is stronger than it has ever been." Throughout the address, the Governor detailed the state's strength and resilience by sharing stories of several Good Samaritans, helpers and heroes who attended the address, which included economic development leaders, teachers, health care heroes and first responders. To capitalize on the work Kentuckians are doing to make their communities better, the Governor said everyone must continue to come together to move the state forward by renewing investments in economic development, communities affected by natural disasters, education, infrastructure, health care and public safety. "To me, improving life right here at home is the most important focus that we can have," Gov. Beshear said. "And these next four years are our chance - Kentucky's chance - to be the difference, to be both an economic and a moral leader of this country. This is our time to push away the division; to prove we can govern without name-calling or scapegoating; to do it without anger, fear or hatred. That we not only talk about our collective faith, but actually live it." The Governor's funding priorities for the current session were unveiled Dec. 18, 2023, in his budget address, and he continued to push for several key investments during Wednesday's speech, including funding to support universal pre-K for all 4-year-olds and help for child care providers, as well as an 11% pay raise for all public school employees. The mobile classroom will offer learning opportunities after school and during summer months. The community and families served would therein gain awareness of the significance of early childhood education and be provided information on available resources and community support programs. Taylor County's grant writer, Suzanne Grubesic, and Family Resource Director, Brandy McCubbin, worked on a comprehensive plan addressing community specific need. Tommy Druen: Looking for Happiness Previous Column: The benefits of reading By Tommy Druen I'm not a person that wears emotions on my sleeve. It's not that I don't feel them, but the outwardly appearance is admittedly low. My family makes fun of this fact, often accompanied by robot noises. In my defense, I claim it to be stoicism, but it's more likely that I simply relate with Elsa from Frozen when she sings "Conceal, don't feel." Despite this fact, over all I do feel happiness. My life is very comfortable and, despite always wanting to better myself, I do have a feeling of contentment. Maybe I don't show it enough, but those emotions do exist. What I find difficulty with though are feelings of joy, excitement and ebullience. For a long time, I thought that was just a personal issue. Resolutions: A Path to Personal Triumph and Renewal Making New Year Resolutions: A Path to Personal Triumph and Renewal By David Goguen The tradition of making New Year's resolutions dates back centuries, rooted in both the secular and religious practices that symbolize reflection and renewal. People tend to make New Year's resolutions to motivate themselves towards positive change, improvement, or to maintain a good aspect of their life. For the last 16 years or so, I've developed a system for making and organizing New Year's Resolutions based on what I call the Mind, Body, and Spirit Method. The idea for this came while walking on an indoor track at a YMCA in Ohio. On the third turn of the track there was a poster that explained the red triangle in the YMCA logo, which is symbolic of the organization's spirit, mind, and body philosophical foundations.
