Granny Waggener and Christmases past

Christmas memories collection by Ed Waggener, 2015

Granny Waggener had little in material things. She had a big peppermint stick she carried from child's house to child's house to share with grandchildren.

That and wonderful stories to fascinate three little boys - Ralph Roy, Bobby Chelf, and me - about the huge catfish caught at Milltown, about hoop snakes and glass snakes, about how terrible Mickey, the next door cat was, when he raided the baby jay's nest in "her" maple tree, which she could look down on from her second story room.

She was so precious to the younger ones in our family, because she was the only grandparent we knew. My Chelf grandparents Lee Roy Chelf and Annetta (Nettie) Spurling Chelf, and my grandfather R. A. Waggener, were gone before we were born. Ed collected A Columbia Magazine Christmas Story Anthology for a read-aloud time of memories.

“Great news, Team Kentucky: My post-surgery reports came back clean!

Phillip Wood Coffey - A Warm Embrace

WARM EMBRACE - A Tribute to Lois

He stood among the many doomed, shared his thoughts
And prayers also for all the many enlightened, too.

Tried to list all of his misgivings - this he could not do
Of things unsaid and never to be forgotten soon.

Gifts received, much less given - a nod to each and everyone
loving all the many children so.

Poinsettia gifts can can be kept alive with care

Legend has it that long ago, a poor Mexican girl picked weeds from the roadside to place before the nativity scene in her small church. When she placed the bouquet on the altar, the weeds burst into brilliant red blooms. The child ran back to her village, exclaiming that she had witnessed a Christmas miracle.

The miracle lives on, though it's mainly in the variety of colors that have been developed. Millions of poinsettias are sold each year in November and December. Red is the most popular color, but they now come in white, pink, rose, and peppermint.
