Guilty plea result of KSP fatal collision investigation

Campbellsville, KY - (July 10, 2023) - On May 08, 2023, Donald Slusher, age 50, of Knox County, entered a guilty plea stemming from a Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 investigation of a fatal collision.

The collision occurred in Taylor County on March 25, 2021 and was investigated by Senior Trooper Weston Sullivan. Mr. Slusher was operating a commercial vehicle under the influence of drugs, above the posted speed limit, when his tractor and trailer overturned. His vehicle then crossed the centerline of KY 210 approximately 9 miles west of Campbellsville. Slusher's vehicle struck four other vehicles head-on, taking the life of Michael Brandon Heath.

Gradyville native Virginia Sparks Wonderling of LaCrosse, WI is spending the month of July with her niece Jamie Shelley in Columbia. She visited with fellow ACHS graduate Joe Lynn Barbee and they all walked with the tour group at Friday night's Lanterns and Tombstones event led by Mike Watson and Dave Thomas. The ACHS class of 1962 will be getting together on July 19th in Lexington. She said to see Facebook for details of the upcoming event.

Kenneth Richard Blair, 90, Russell County, KY (1933-2023)

Kenneth Richard Blair, age 90, of Russell Springs, died Monday, July 10, 2023, at Russell County Hospital.

He was born March 25, 1933, in Russell Springs, Kentucky, to the late Herbert and Effie Maye Chrisman Blair. Kenneth was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War.

Excellence in Teaching tradition continues at CU

Teachers from Adair, Taylor, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell counties are among 236 recipients from 83 districts across the Commonwealth of Kentucky recognized by Campbellsville University in the 37th Excellence in Teaching (EIT) program.

His grandmother would put all her effort into making Christmas special by selecting just the right gift for everyone while leaving her gifts unopened.

Robert A. "Bob" Weis of Russell County passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023. He was 66 years old.

Funeral Services will be held at 4pmCT on Friday July 14, 2023, at Wilson Funeral Home, 391 E. Steve Wariner Drive, Russell Springs, Kentucky.

T.J. Samson Community Hospital recognized for stroke care

Glasgow, KY - T.J. Samson Community Hospital has received the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines(R) - Stroke SilverPlus quality achievement award for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.

Each year, program participants qualify for the award by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also educate patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.

"T.J. Samson Community Hospital is committed to improving patient care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines," stated Brandon Dickey, Executive Vice President - Director of Nursing. "Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better. The end goal is to ensure more people in south central Kentucky can experience longer, healthier lives."

The purpose of the special called meeting is to interview applicants for teaching vacancies.

Winners of 2023 KDA Poster and Essay Contest

Frankfort, KY - The winners of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture's annual Poster and Essay Contest were announced during an awards ceremony on Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville. The theme of the contest, "Kentucky Agriculture is Everywhere," reflected on the important role agriculture has in our world.

Among the winners were Christina England, Emily Shaw and Aleigha Wilson of Metcalfe County.

The KDA received 557 entries, including 506 posters. Each winning entry received a $100 award from Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom and will be displayed at the 2023 Kentucky State Fair in August in Louisville.

Bailey Watts awarded Doug Reece Memorial Scholarship

Bailey Watts, an incoming junior at Adair County High School, recently attended the Rogers Scholars Program at Morehead State University. Bailey, captain of the ACHS Academic Team, was awarded the Doug Reece Memorial Scholarship for having the highest application score out of her 2023 class of scholars.

The Rogers Scholars Program is provided through the Center for Rural Development. Rogers Scholars provides leadership and college scholarship opportunities to help upcoming high school juniors in Southern and Eastern Kentucky develop the skills they need to seize their potential as the region's next generation of business and entrepreneurial leaders.

During this intensive week-long program, Rogers Scholars work on building their leadership skills, participate in a series of team-building exercises; receive hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, healthcare, and civic engagement; and interact with nationally recognized business leaders and entrepreneurs. The program focuses on developing skills in leadership, technology, entrepreneurship, and community service.

Stanley Wayne Baird, 80, Russell County, KY (1942-2023)

Stanley Wayne Baird, of Russell Springs, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, July 9, 2023, at Russell County Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was 80 years of age.

Wayne was a retired carpenter and a US Army veteran. He was a faithful member, deacon, and treasurer at Square Oak Separate Baptist Church, where he served in times past as Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of over 55 years with the Russell Springs Masonic Lodge #941 and a member of Gideon's International. He began singing at a young age and loved spreading the gospel of Christ through song. In later years, he was a member of the Square Oak Boys; they sang at many churches in and around Russell County. Wayne enjoyed going fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a true gentleman, who left a positive impact on each life he touched.
