Make photos from old negatives and slides for free

The Adair Genealogy and History Center has installed an Epson V600 photo, negative, and slide scanner at the public computer adjacent to the front entrance to the building.

This goes beyond the typical scanner that scans photos and documents, allowing users to scan black and white negatives, color negatives, and slides.

We want to give visitors the opportunity to digitize and preserve old slides, negatives, photos, and letters.

July 4th fireworks time - have umbrella or be in vehicle

By Carol Perkins
Previous article: Time for a hearing exam

As I think about the Fourth of July, I am taken back to when Guy and I went to the Muncie Court picnic at the Chambers' home. Church members, neighbors, and lots of children gathered for a cookout. Harold fried the burgers, and we all brought side dishes. Most of those who attended are now gone.

Harold spent his money on burgers and fireworks. Likely hundreds of dollars. We gathered under trees or sat in yard chairs in the driveway as those who knew what they were doing shot a series of beautiful displays against the night sky. A perfect end to a perfect day with friends.

I was sitting in my lawn chair at the edge of the driveway, looking up at the spectacle, when a "bomb" dropped out of the sky and hit me on the head like a rocket. KERPLUNK.

Letter: keep to Roberts Rules of Order, stick to agenda

Victoria Pike writes:
Regarding the open meetings regulations, Roberts Rules of Order would be a good start and sticking to the agenda a second. Citizens comments always come last. A citizen is to wait until he or she is recognized by the Judge and that comment has been set at 3 minutes as long as I have been going. It’s the Judge's duty to keep his court in control and use his gavel to control his meeting.

Simple courtesy would go a long way. Both ways. I’m not taking sides here. Citizens should be respectful and shorten comments to 3 minutes. This time limit needs to be stated when citizens comments start and enforced.

Again this is about taking care of our county employees who take care of us in some of the worst times. Who does, or does not like who, has no business in a Fiscal Court meeting. Professional actions are expected at most meeting. I hope to see this at our next Fiscal Court meeting. - Vicky

Letter: Support for our local Magistrates

Vicki Brock writes:
I'd like to offer my support for our local Magistrates. I don't remember hearing of any discord in their meetings prior to the first of this year. I'm sure there have been many disagreements but nothing like what's happening now. The ones I know personally have been nice and conducted themselves like professionals. I'm sure the others have been too.

Let's not jump to conclusions and put too much blame on them. All of us can get riled up when enough pressure is put on us. I'm not referring to any of the policy that has been discussed in their meeting. Only the actions of the people. I appreciate all the good things that have been done for our wonderful county and hope things can get back on track soon.

Safe at Home program helps in domestic violence cases

Senate Bill 79, the Safe at Home Act to protect domestic violence survivors, took effect this week. Sponsored by Senator Julie Raque Adams (R-Louisville), this law bolsters the Secretary of State's Address Confidentiality Program by allowing those fleeing domestic abuse to shield their new addresses from public record without having to obtain a court order, and to mask their addresses on publicly available government records, beyond just the voter rolls.

"Kentucky has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the nation," said Adams. "Protecting our most vulnerable is a team effort. Thanks to Senator Julie Raque Adams, legislators of both parties, and Governor Beshear for working with us to combat stalking."

ACSO SCAM ALERT: get numbers, hang up, call us

By Adair County Sheriff Josh Brockman

I have received several calls this week in reference to scams being affiliated with the use of sheriff's offices and police departments.

In these instances, the caller used an app to make it look like they were calling from an actual law enforcement agency. The caller had extensive information about the individual they were calling. Information included their family names, addresses, maiden names, license numbers, birth dates, and other identifying information.

The caller proceeded to give case numbers where cases were pending against them and advised them if they wanted to go ahead and prepay their bond they could be given a court date instead of being arrested.
