Letter: All mushrooms are fungi, but not all fungi are mushrooms

Marie Freeman writes:
Definition fungi or mushroom is complicated one but all mushrooms are fungi. To me, there's nothing much more complex than the world of fungus...mushrooms. Interesting enough our DNA is closer to fungi than any other plant. Likely in the photo: Blewit (common name) Clitocybe nuda
I am no expert by any means just a hobbyist. It's called blewit because of the blue tinge, purple tinge to the mushroom. You caught this young and fresh because as they get older they lose that coloring. May also have a sweet odor to it. The great world of fungus. Now that we're finally getting some rain perhaps we'll see more. As always with fungus, it is an assumption, not a definite. Proceed with caution. https://www.mushroomexpert.com/clitocybe_nuda.html

Russell Co. Library awarded grant from EBSCO Solar

From Kathleen McEvoy

Ipswich, MA - EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) will be awarding $300,000 in grants to three libraries looking to further their sustainability goals. Russell County Public Library (RCPL), Kentucky; Purdue University Fort Wayne Helmke Library, Indiana; and Maplewood Memorial Library Foundation, New Jersey, will each receive an EBSCO Solar Grant to pay for the installation of a solar array. The grants offset the cost of installing solar panels and allow the libraries to reduce their electricity expenditures.

RCPL will be working to install solar panels to offset the library's electrical demand by a minimum of 40 percent, helping to facilitate an investment in clean energy. Russell County Public Library Director Lindsey Westerfield says, "RCPL is committed to fostering sustainability within our community. With the help of the EBSCO Solar grant, we will be the first civic agency in Russell County to implement a solar energy system, creating an education point for students, government and business leaders and community members."

Carol Perkins: time for a hearing exam

Previous Column: Noticing changes

By Carol Perkins

It was time. I had been putting it off, but with more than a little encouragement, I made the appointment with an audiologist. A document on her wall showed a degree from Vanderbilt. I was in expert hands. Did I or did I not need hearing aids?

After a battery of tests, I learned both ears were equally weak. Weakened by age, genetics, or by loud concerts.

DOT suggestion: Get Semi Trucks to use Bypass

By Joe Hare

If you lived on Jamestown Street in Columbia, you would realize how many through trucks come around the Public Square daily that could use the Veterans Memorial Bypass.

Also there could be a local ordinance banning the use of engine brakes (Jake brakes). Trucks obeying the speed limit really do not have to use engine brakes on Jamestown hill.

I know that the "Jake" brake is the primary brake and saves wear and tear on the air brakes, but as short as this hill is this is really not an issue. This not only would help noise pollution, but would encourage the semi's to use the bypass. This is my humble opinion.
The District 8 Transportation meeting in Columbia is coming up on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 10amCT in City Hall - it is open to the public.
