Kentucky Color: Daylily Stamens

Comments re photo: Bearwallow Church in spring

By Billy Joe Fudge

Daylilies typically have 6 stamens. Yes, the plural form of stamen is stamens. However, if it violates the instructions from someone such as Ms. Willie Rosenbaum, or causes your tongue to wrap around your eye tooth to speak the word "mens", then feel free to use the other correct plural form of the word, stamina. But I digress again!

As I said, Daylilies typically have 6 stamen and being the noticer that I am, I've often thought, as seen in this wonderful picture from Linda, that they formed some kind of foreign language. I've also wondered if they were maybe something akin to Roman Numerals. Maybe Cherokee Numerals, if you will!

At any rate, if the sharing of my noticing impedes your ability to viscerally appreciate the picture, just forget that I said anything!

I've got a story for you, Susan said

By Linda Waggener

Susan Loy told Mig Preisinger and me at the recent Adair Heritage meeting that she joins a growing chorus of people loudly calling for control of traffic on the Public Square.

Citizens have been killed, injured and insulted by drivers not heeding the speed limit, yield signs and crosswalk marks around the Columbia's Square.

She has a front row seat to activities on the square from her work at Barger Insurance located where Ben Franklin once was. Her fellow workers around downtown observe and share the challenges they face each day as they endeavor to walk to the bank, to lunch to mailboxes, UPS and FedEx drops -- each walk, they say, there's a feeling of taking their lives into their own hands because of the unsafe, often hostile traffic movement.

CASA to hold Late Summer New Advocate Training

From Steve Jones, Advocate Development Specialist
CASA of South Central KY

CASA of South Central KY is excited to announce it will hold its next training session for new Advocates using a new format for training as part of its expansion into Allen, Edmonson, and Simpson counties.

CASA has also expanded its services into Allen, Edmonson, and Simpson counties in January of 2023, in addition to already serving Barren, Hart, Metcalfe, and Warren counties. That makes us one of the largest CASA programs in Kentucky. So, we greatly need new volunteers to serve in these three new counties (you can live in any county) in addition to the original four counties!

We have a new training format where of the total 30 hours of training mandated by National CASA, 15 hours can be done in self-guided study, and 15 hours are in the classroom setting. This allows greater flexibility for applicants as they can do half the hours online at home.
