LWC announces new Tennis Head Coach

Lindsey Wilson College Athletic Director Willis Pooler has announced the hiring of Eric Bernabeu as the Blue Raiders' newest men's and women's tennis head coach.

"I'm excited to have Eric join our staff," expresses Pooler. "It was clear during the interview process that he possesses the skills, passion and vision required to lead our tennis programs and compete at the highest level of the NAIA. I believe our student-athlete will have a great experience working with him."

Bernabeu is a 2019 graduate of the University of Pikeville (KY) where he obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration and sports management. He also spent four years as a member of the Bears' men's tennis team, earning second-team and academic all-conference honors in 2017.

After earning his undergraduate degree, Bernabeu attended Campbellsville University and garnered his MBA while playing towards an NAIA Scholar-Athlete accolade in 2020.

Legislators receive overview on juvenile justice disparities

Frankfort, KY - During Tuesday's joint meeting of the Commission on Race and Access to Opportunity and the Juvenile Justice Oversight Council, legislators and others received an overview on disparities within Kentucky's juvenile justice system.

Cortney Downs and Shannon Moody of Louisville-based Kentucky Youth Advocates presented statistics from the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts.

ARRL Field Day on Saturday, June 24

Kentucky Amateur Radio Club

The Amateur Radio Club will be participating in the ARRL Field Day event starting at 8amCT this coming Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Columbia Veterans Memorial Park, Hwy 55 South, Columbia, KY.

Field Day is ham radio's open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.

Milby interning with KDA this summer

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles is welcoming eight college students to the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) campus as summer interns, including University of Kentucky student Riley Milby of Campbellsville.

"Our internship program offers college students a unique opportunity to work alongside our employees and agriculture community," Commissioner Quarles said. "From past experiences, we know this program provides a great advantage to those who want to continue in the agriculture field, helping to launch careers in agriculture or an ag-related field. Some of our interns even go on to become KDA employees."

The Kentucky Department of Agriculture's eight-week summer internship program has provided opportunities for students to gain first-hand experience, knowledge, and understanding of the governmental process through pre-professional work in various occupational fields.

KSP to participate in Operation SafeDRIVE

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement will participate in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Operation SafeDRIVE (Distracted Reckless Impaired Visibility Enforcement) from June 20-22, 2023. This enforcement campaign targets unsafe driving behavior that often leads to crashes involving passenger cars and commercial vehicles. It complements national efforts to educate all drivers on safely sharing roads with large trucks.

The national SafeDRIVE initiative cracks down on dangerous interstate driving behaviors such as aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, failing to wear a seat belt, distracted driving, and driving under the influence. During this effort, KSP Commercial Vehicle Inspectors will open scale facilities, ensuring commercial drivers follow safety regulations, including hours of service compliance, commercial driver license compliance, medical certification, and commercial motor vehicle credentialing.

Tandy & Loy Family Reunion on July 8

A Tandy & Loy Family Reunion is planned for Saturday, July 8, 2023, from 1pmET until we finish talking, at the Holiday Inn Express, 102 Plantation Drive, Campbellsville, KY. We have rented the hotel's meeting room near the lobby all day, and we have a block of rooms reserved under Loy Family Reunion. The number to reserve a room is 270-465-2727.

We are also in search of pictures our great-grandparents, Jeremiah Burbridge Loy (Jerry B. Loy) 1850-1892 & Louisa (Lou) Turner (Dillingham) Loy 1855-1917. My name is Jerry B. Huffman. I am the youngest son of Marilyn (Loy) Huffman who was the youngest child of Acy and Annie Loy. My Grandfather was Acy Loy, the youngest son of Jerry & Lou Loy who married Annie Tandy and moved to Lanesville, Indiana. My Grandpa Acy was a barber and part owner of the Columbia Barber Shop, downtown.

Bridge on Warner Ridge Rd. in Russell Co. to be closed Monday

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 Office advises motorists that beginning Monday, June 26, 2023, a portion of Warner Ridge Road (KY 3281) in Russell County will be closed to through traffic for a bridge replacement project.

Starting Monday, the roadway will be closed to through traffic at the bridge over Jobbes Fork at mile point 1.7 which is located between Story Lane and Lawless Cemetery Road.

A signed detour route will be posted during the closure.

Commencement and hooding ceremonies mark a "joyous and proud moment of celebration" for students and family alike, Dr. Rick Casey told the candidates for hooding at Campbellsville University's Ph.D. hooding ceremony last month.

"You should enjoy every minute of this day because it is a day where all of your hard work pays off, and it is your day," Casey said.
