Local library staff awarded Library Science tuition scholarships

From Kim Saylor Brannock/Cathrine Giles

Frankfort, KY - Eleven public library staff have been awarded the Library Science Tuition Scholarship for the fall 2023 semester, including Keri Burton with the Taylor County Public Library, and Michelle Yates with the Casey County Public Library.

The scholarships were awarded in partnership with the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians and the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, an agency of the Education and Labor Cabinet. Kentucky law requires public libraries be staffed by personnel certified by the Kentucky State Board for the Certification of Librarians. To help ensure public libraries meet statutory requirements, the board offers these scholarships to assist public library staff in completing college-level library science courses.

KY Overdose deaths decreased in 2022

From Crystal Staley/Morgan Hall

Frankfort, KY - On June 15, 2023, Gov. Andy Beshear released the 2022 Overdose Fatality Report stating that 2,135 Kentuckians lost their lives to a drug overdose last year. That is a decline of more than 5% compared with the previous year and is the first decline since 2018.

"Seeing a decrease in overdose deaths is encouraging, but we still have a long way to go, because one Kentucky life lost to overdose is one too many," said Gov. Beshear. "As your Governor, I will work every day to improve access to treatment and programs to help those fighting this disease to win while also providing Kentucky's law enforcement with more resources to get these dangerous drugs off our streets."

The report indicates that 90% of overdose deaths involved opioids, and fentanyl continues to be the most prevalent drug contributing to those deaths, accounting for 72.5% nationwide in 2022. Potent, inexpensive methamphetamine was also a significant contributor to overdose deaths.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Audrey's Oyster Casserole

By Linda Waggener

A gift came my way this week from my sister-in-law, Fay McKinley - the recipe for Audrey Waggener's oyster casserole.

I remembered Ed making it for me and our sons around holiday times, however, like his mother, he didn't want to be bothered with questions while cooking, nor writing down a recipe to be passed along.

Fay, a librarian dedicated to preserving documentation like written recipes, said she made it often for her husband Peanut who also loved it, and she shared the following recipe.
