Letter: Reply to Mr. Pogozelski

Heather Spoon writes:

Thank you so much, Mr. Pogozelski, for your vote of confidence for not only the Judge, but for me and my family! We love Adair County ... so much so that we all went away to college, and then came back home to contribute to one of the best communities on the planet. When Dad was elected as CJE, I truly thought our community would be thankful for getting TWO people to work hard for Adair County for the price of ONE! But politics and personal agendas have spoken. And that's OK!

You're so right when you remind everyone that the Judge was ELECTED by the PEOPLE to do this job ... just like all the previous Judges. He deserves a chance to do that job.

Tommy Druen: The world will be alright

Previous Column: It all started with a cat

By Tommy Druen

In the spring of 2000, I was in a government seminar class during my senior year in college. Other than the fact the class was being taught by Centre College's legendary Dr. Larry Matheny, the class was great because it was small, we knew each other well and it was more discussion than anything.

During that discussion one day, it was brought up that people tend to become more cynical with age, with that progression hitting a hyperdrive in a person's 40s. One of my good friends immediately said, "God help anyone who's around Druen in 20 years!" Cue the laughter from the rest of the class.

Opinion: Some things to think about

By Billy Joe Fudge

Be it federal, state or local, the sole purpose of government is to do for the people that which they as individuals cannot do for themselves. Government is an organization formed by the people. Subsequently, government is operated by the people through a body of individuals elected by the people and by the nature of this relationship; the people are responsible for funding their government.

Now, concerning the recent kerfuffle at our fiscal court meeting and disagreements about establishing new levels of taxation, we must remember that those things are the past. Let us keep it in the past, learn from it and go forward without animosity and with intent to make Adair County and our surrounding communities a pleasant, attractive and prosperous place to live.

Opinion: Taxes

By Kevin Knifley

The citizens of Columbia and Adair Co. are currently taxed more than any other citizens in our history. Now take into account the alcohol revenue. Shouldn't the dollars collected from our taxpayers also be at record levels?

When these taxes are voted in they don't get voted out down the road. Like the fraudulent one bailing out the hospital. Let's not forget no one in our local government will go on record that it will go away once the debt is paid in full, which at best is shameful.

I feel for the city's workers who wrongfully have to pay the tax and it's unfairness that county ones don't. The only way to balance it fairly would be an income tax but that'll never happen.

We are all entitled to our opinions and I respect them all, but personally I'm very proud of the County Magistrates. Thank you for standing up for the working class.

Opinion: a lot of disagreements in Fiscal Court

By John Pogozelski

I just read in The Community Voice, the 9 March 2023 edition story about OUR NEWLY ELECTED Judge Executive, Mr. Larry R. Bryant and the opposition he has been receiving from some of the County Magistrates. The Magistrates main gripe, sounding somewhat child like, seems to be about nepotism and their now apparent problem in cooperating with the Judge and performance of his duties, which he WAS DULY LEGALLY ELECTED TO PERFORM; ie. stonewalling, ignoring and so forth The Judge because of his daughter VOLUNTEERING, for an UNPAID position, to help her Dad out for a couple of hours a week in his office duties, which is basically running HIS OWN ELECTED OFFICE POSITION within established guidelines as he sees fit and in the better interest of Adair County.
