Are we having fun yet?

2023-01-03 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Vicky Pike of Miss Vicky's Pampered Angus Ranch.

Little Willa Jean Bryant's expression at her grandfather's swearing in on Sunday, January 1, 2023 at the Judicial Center looks to say she's not sure politics is fun.

She was among all the family members at the Inauguration of newly elected Adair County leaders surrounding new County Judge Executive Larry Russell Bryant.

Columbia Veterans Project begins for 2023

From Tiffany Collins

The City of Columbia will be placing veteran flags around the square; and, just off the square beginning again this Memorial Day. The project honors local veterans from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, along with those in active duty and other veterans.

"The town started last year with an initial plan for eight banners, and it gradually increased to 32 total banners," said Mayor Pamela Hoots.

The City would like to encourage those who would like a banner in recognition of a family member or friend to come by City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, and complete the form.

Strong derecho or sustained winds?

By Veronica Arnold

At around 1:42pm in the Fairplay area there was a low sustained rumbling that started sounding like thunder but then sustained for what could have been several thunder claps together. I asked other residents in area who heard it also. Curious if anyone else heard it or knows what it was. Anyone sustain damage from it?

A derecho, which is a line of straight winds, could be possible with the big storm system blowing through. Thoughts?

Notice to Taxpayers: Deadline extended

Adair County Sheriff Josh Brockman has extended the period to pay taxes before the penalty kicks in by one extra day due to the way the holiday fell at the end of 2022.

Normally, the 10% penalty would kick in on the first, however, with the holiday causing the Annex to be closed on Friday, this courtesy is being offered. County taxes have been steadily coming in with over 77% collected in the month of October alone.

Usually about 99% of all taxes are collected and they are running ahead this season with 94% in now.

City of Columbia gives update on ARPA Business Funding

From Tiffany Collins

The Columbia City Council allocated a portion of the ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding to a grant program that is being utilized by local businesses. There were certain stipulations placed upon the funding and the manner(s) in which it was to used by the community.

This was a result of the ARPA committee allocation of funding for primarily drug and alcohol abuse and appropriate support funding, small business assistance, and the updating of the city park properties. The city has been very frugal with the monies and have around 75% of the funding received remaining.

A three person board was appointed by the Mayor with approval from the city council to review applications for small businesses. Any small business within the city limits can apply for funding to be used for updating the exterior of their businesses. The owner/leaser complete the application that indicates name of business, what their project is, and the estimated time line for completion. The three members of the board are: Leon Lewis, Mary Beth Phelps, and Joe Willis.

There are thirteen businesses that were approved in the first round of funding.
