Great Wooded South Lexicon XIV

Previous Lexicon: Great Wooded South Lexicon XIII

By Billy Joe Fudge

As often happens when one finds oneself battling with a stubborn fit of insomnia around 2:00 in the morning, one's mind tends to wander way beyond the peripheries of normal thought! Recently, I found myself way beyond those peripheries.

Suddenly, the word, "stob" and a couple more words which were of very common usage here in the Great Wooded South when I was a youngster leaped into my consciousness. Now, not only are they not commonly used, one can hardly find the definition in the Webster's of today! There are definitions for these words of course, but not ones specific to the usage dating back to my youth.

So, in the interest of preserving those specific definitions of usage and their inherent relationship to each other, here goes:
  • Newground - (Noun) a new area of farmland created from woodland by cutting and removing all the trees, cutting the saplings, then piling the brush and tree tops and burning them. The stumps would often be left to rot over the years or dug out or blasted with dynamite.

  • Stob - (Noun) either a dead stick, or inch or so diameter sapling stump protruding from the soil.

  • Grub - (Verb) to dig a stob, sapling, bush, or stick from its vertical position to be disposed of by piling and burning or laying on the ground to rot.

Tommy Druen: Home improvement

Previous Column: Fighting the same old battles

By Tommy Druen

It's never a good feeling to walk into a place where you recognize your ignorance abounds. It's something I've experienced plenty though. I've been on the campuses of some of the greatest universities in our nation. I've gone to some of the biggest and most historical libraries. And... I occasionally go to Lowe's.

There's a scene in Parks and Recreation where Ron Swanson is in Lowe's and gets asked if he needs any assistance. His reply is "I know more than you." It's a funny scene and one that I could see playing out with many people I know. I'm not one of them though. Today, I got turned around looking for a hammer.

Like most places I go though, sometimes the people-watching is the most entertaining part.

So pride comes not across

A sonnet for the birthday of Lisa Comperry
By Robert Stone, 31 December 2022
Same hands that reach for photographic tools,
with gentle touch will care for those in need.
Past learning formal and informal rules
make outcomes that set standards will exceed

Same eyes that search for stimulating views,
without delay know those who suffer loss.
Old skills and new approaches let one choose
how best to give so pride comes not across.

Same heart that knows demand for working well,
with ease can recognize a failing hope.
Dim memories and bright new ways cast spell
to show the down and out how better cope.

Same love that loves the lovable and less
with patience will at all times love express.
