Basketball: LWC Women down Florida Memorial 76-71 Miami Gardens, FL - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team shook off a sluggish start to collect their second win in as many days at the St. Thomas Invitational. The Blue Raiders downed Florida Memorial to close out play at the event on a 76-71 result. Three Blue Raiders in Amelia Hodges, Maleigha Oldham, and Lucy Patterson finished the contest with 17 points. Patterson finished the game with a double-double after grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Carol Perkins: A Long Winter's Nap Previous Column: Bracing for Bad Weather By Carol Perkins A deflated feeling consumes me for a few days when Christmas festivities end. I'm drooping like a float with a hole in it, and am ready to remove twinkling lights, glittering balls, and flickering candles. The build-up to Christmas is as exciting as preparing for prom, but when it's over, well, it's over. I doubt I am alone. When the last of the family left on December 30th, the holiday season ended for us. Before Christmas, we had get-togethers with extended family, but our children couldn't come until after Christmas. We didn't let the date bother us. We celebrated on December 28th. First, we visited my mother and she enjoyed the grandkids, who are all teens. My brother Henry drove from Crestwood to see them. We exchanged gifts and swapped stories. Then, we went back to our house where we played the cup game I had seen on Facebook and the grandkids took away some cash. Basketball: LWC Men to battle Lee in exhibition contest On Friday afternoon, December 30, 2022, the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team will take its final step away from its Mid-South Conference play as they travel to Cleveland, Tennessee for an exhibition showdown with Lee (TN). Tip-off from Paul Dana Walker Arena is slated for 3pmCT. This will be the Blue Raiders' third exhibition contest of the 2022-23 season after previously visiting Murray State and Austin Peay State. Lee, an NCAA DII opponent, comes into the contest with a 7-2 overall record and a member of the Gulf South Conference. KY awarded nearly $36M for kindergarten readiness From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear announced on Thursday that the federal government has selected Kentucky for a nearly $36 million grant to support families and the state's economy by ensuring more children are ready for kindergarten. The Office of Early Childhood Development Preschool Development Birth through Five (PDG B-5) grant will provide Kentucky with $11.9 million each year over a three-year period. The Governor said these funds will help the commonwealth develop and expand early learning programs; build an early childhood education workforce talent pipeline and expand access to high quality for children most in need. CPD: Indiana man arrested for trafficking By Officer Adam Cravens, PIO Columbia Police Department The Columbia Police Department arrested an Indiana man for trafficking on Thursday afternoon, December 29, 2022, after initially being called to TJ Health Columbia for a possible drug overdose. After officers spoke with subjects at TJ Health, a welfare check was conducted at a residence on Creekbend Drive just outside of the city limits. Once contact was made, a male subject was found to be in possession of a large quantity of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Officers also seized a firearm located on scene. KSP investigates missing person and murder in Marion Co. From Trooper Jonathan Houk Lebanon, KY - On the evening of December 23, 2022, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 received a complaint of a missing person in Marion County. Family members spoke with KSP Troopers and reported that Kevin Thomas Elder, age 56 of Elizabethtown, was missing and he was last known to have been in the Raywick community of Marion County. The ensuing investigation led KSP to obtain and execute a search warrant on a property and residence belonging to Donald Keith Elders, age 53 of Raywick, on the morning of December 29, 2022. Information obtained during the execution of the search warrant lead investigators to locate the body of Mr. Elder in an outbuilding on the property. Mr. Elders was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and has been lodged in the Marion County Detention Center.
