A cold day, once upon a time...

By Mike Watson

Thursday, January 24th, 1963 was the national weather day for Adair County. National news shows reported the official low temperature, a record so far as official statistics could reveal, was 30 degrees below zero at Columbia, Kentucky. Temperature as much as 36 below was recorded elsewhere in the county, but was considered "unofficial." Bradfordville, in Marion County, tied with Columbia on the 24th with 30 below. The following week Henry Giles, in his column Spout Springs Splashes, reported that neighbor Carl Lemmon's thermometer registered 35 below zero, was on a tree in the yard. Mr. Giles' had 28 below at 4:40 a.m. on the fateful date.

On Tuesday, January 22nd, four to five inches of snow had fallen and temperatures began to drop. There was considerable wind with this weather front and drifting became a problem. I often heard our dad, Carl Watson, speak of the drifted snow being even with the fence posts on our farm out 704 on Earls' Ridge, between Old Concord-Walnut Grove School, and Inroad.

Schools in Adair were closed on Wednesday the 23rd and remained closed into the following week due to the extreme, extended cold and lack of melting.

Not what: a sonnet of responsibility

by Robert Stone, 25 December 2022
It matters not what kind of tree you trim
if garlanded by a hand that cares for life.
The poor are always seeking shelter slim
and ways by which to not provoke sharp strife.

If matters not what sort of gift you give
to flatter those you think you must impress.
The poor are always needing more to live
and should not live in fear to future guess.

It matters not what feast you can provide
for friends who are already blessed enough.
The poor are always hoping to survive
and willing do their best when times are tough.

If matters not what day you celebrate,
the poor are always waiting in dire strait.

Russell County pursuit results in arrest

Friday, December 23, 2022 at 2:25pmCT, Russell County Deputy Bunch conducted a traffic stop on a 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander on North Highway 127 just south of Russell Springs city limits, for driving too fast for road conditions, improper passing, speeding, and reckless driving for passing multiple vehicles and almost hitting another vehicle head-on.

Deputy Bunch made contact with the driver, 44-year-old Brandy Tolliver of Louisville, KY, a former Russell County resident. While Deputy Bunch was in the process of writing a citation, Tolliver fled the scene and a vehicle pursuit ensued, but was terminated as road conditions were too hazardous.

Tolliver fled toward Casey County where deputies, who had been alerted by Russell County, attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Tolliver and he fled from them as well.
