Clock ticking toward drastic weather change 8pmCT -- The rain is coming down hard in Columbia now in 43-degree temperatures. The storm is marching east along the Parkway as predicted by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) weather. At this hour Paducah is at 9 degrees. Hopkinsville has dropped below freezing to 21 degrees now and Bowling Green is down to 35 degrees from a high of around 50 during the day. Motorists advised to avoid travel during peak storm activity From Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe Frankfort, KY - With arctic temperatures, strong winds and snow expected to appear Thursday afternoon into Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) officials urge travelers to watch for hazardous road conditions that can create slick spots, limit visibility and cause traffic delays. Highway crews are on high alert and are prepared to deploy and respond as needed through the holiday weekend. Preparing for the freezing temperatures Warming center locations are available by calling 270-384-6464 By Linda Waggener Columbia plumber and electrician Ricky Collins advises that we keep water running in all sinks and tubs during the freezing conditions expected to begin tonight. I'd always thought about trying to save water but he says this is not a freeze that needs weak effort. Keep both hot and cold water running, a stream could be up to the diameter of a pencil. He said a little higher water bill is still cheaper than he is if pipes freeze and burst and a plumber call is needed. He showed me how to turn off the water outside if emergency help is not close by. Temperatures are expected to drop suddenly to below freezing and stay that way through Christmas weekend. Ricky said predictions are that it will warm up next week making this storm less damaging than when the ice and snow storm hit in recent memory that closed the parkway and kept the freeze on for a week. Apply now for GSE Deadline to apply for the Governor's School for Entrepreneurs is January 23, 2023. From Kim Saylor Brannock Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear has announced that the Governor's School for Entrepreneurs (GSE), a three-week residential summer program where Kentucky teens focus on product innovation and business model design, is taking applications for its summer 2023 program at KentuckyGSE.com for students currently in grades 9-11. The program will take place at Northern Kentucky University in two separate sessions: June 11 - July 1, and July 9-29. Applications are due by January 23, 2023, and selections will be announced in April. GSE students can earn scholarships to Kentucky colleges and universities, high school class credits and access to business start-up tools. There is no cost to participate in this transformative experience.
