Letter: ARPA Funds

By James Roberts

I think that this government handout money could have been used more wisely than to paint and remodel buildings that are owned by individuals that can afford to do it without any outside help. Not only that but most of these buildings are sitting vacant or have been vacant for years.

Why paint or remodel something if it's just going to continue to sit vacant? There should have been a stipulation in the deal that the owner(s) would have a set amount of time to open it up for some type of business to be able to get the repairs done free. The way it stands now is that the city has spent all this money and the owner(s) could possibly sell the property and not be liable for any money for repairs. You can literally go to any other town that has a downtown or square and not only are the buildings vibrant but, are being occupied by a business that WILL attract customers/tourists. Being empty does not do that.

The honor and dignity of this excess money would have been better spent for individual home repairs for people who cannot afford it themselves rather than the fortunate to prosper even more! Just the way I see it.

Time for 2022 Small Business Tax Credit is running out

From Crystal Staley/Brandon Mattingly

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, September 29, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear urged Kentucky's small businesses investing in our communities and creating jobs to apply for a tax credit of up to $25,000.

To receive the Kentucky Small Business Tax Credit, qualifying small businesses should apply now to ensure their best chance of approval in time for this year's tax filings. Tax credits are available to eligible companies that added at least one new full-time employee and invested $5,000 or more in qualifying equipment or technology within the past 24 months.

"We want to make sure our small business owners know that this program is available, and we remind them that it is time to apply," Gov. Beshear said. "This program encourages our small businesses to grow even more, which benefits their community and our great state."

Governor urges caution as wildfire hazard season begins Oct 1

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - Governor Beshear and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman urged every Kentuckian to be alert as Fall wildfire hazard season in Kentucky begins October 1, bringing outdoor burning restrictions to the state.

"With regions of the Commonwealth recovering from flooding damage, it is especially important that all Kentuckians be vigilant with fire safety when outdoors," Gov. Beshear said. "Think of others so that we can all be safe."

The Commonwealth's outdoor burning law (KRS149.400) prohibits burning between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. (prevailing local time), if the fire is within 150 feet of any woodland, brushland, or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. These restrictions are in effect every fall (October 1 - December 15) and spring (February 15 - April 30) to help prevent wildfires.
