Disease affecting cattle detected in Kentucky

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - Two cases of a new, potentially dangerous, disease of cattle has been detected in Kentucky, according to Kentucky State Veterinarian Dr. Katie Flynn.

Theileria orientalis Ikedia, which is a protozoon known to be carried by the Asian Longhorned tick (ALT), has been diagnosed in two beef herds, one in Fleming County and the second in Hart County. In each instance, a beef breed bull fell ill and died. There is no relationship between the herds.

"The Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Office of the State Veterinarian is working closely with agriculture producers to contain these incidents and protect our herds across the state," Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. "Protecting the health of livestock in the commonwealth is a top priority of the Kentucky Department of Agriculture."

Phillip Coffey - Time Spent

TIME SPENT - By Phillip Coffey

Cicadas taking up a lot of harmonious singing, no gripes among them I hear.
No need of complaining about all the temporal hardships, time here soon spent.
Herd up all of the harvest of rejoicing ages before it begins to be turning white.
Listen to the cagey elders among us - they will up and tell you - 'life is just too short.'

No time should be wasted on anything - lent to us for such a short season.
Not necessary to list all your faults among the neighborhood - may not be entertaining.
Everyone has slipped from the narrowed pathway that's straight - give them a lift, or maybe a ride
While they meticulously make the necessary adjustments with Christ to get back in stride.
