Adair Arts Council update and an invitation

By Anne Bird

As Covid is ramping up and as a new school year is starting for many, organizations that were hoping to get back in gear are already deciding that everyone's health is at the top of "what do we do next list" and meetings and events are being put on hold (again).

Since the Adair County Arts Council has been on hiatus for the last couple of months and the earth has still not righted itself on a healthy axis, our thoughts are for everyone to stay healthy and safe.

Think of how you have, and moving forward will share/mentor your(the) skills, that have brought you to the Art world and the Adair County Arts Council.

Carol Perkins: The Line

Previous Column: Check the Time

By Carol Perkins

I drove by the elementary school around one-thirty in the afternoon and wondered what was happening inside that would draw so many vehicles. The line from the front door snaked its way around the board of education offices, the Ralph Reece baseball field, and to the main highway. What I couldn't see at the time was a secondary line from the old blue gym, through the back parking lot of the board of education intersecting with the main line. What was happening?

When I mentioned this is someone, she laughed. "That's the pickup line."

"Picking up kids at one in the afternoon?" I asked.

"No, getting in line to pick them up at the end of the day. They start lining up around one or one-thirty."

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - In a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, the pedestrian is far more likely to be killed or injured. For this reason, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in October to promote National Pedestrian Safety Month.

"We are asking every driver to watch for pedestrians as you would if it was one of your friends or your family members, and asking every pedestrian to be as aware of their surroundings as possible," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "Common-sense habits, especially putting your phone down while driving or walking, can save dozens of Kentuckians' lives every year."

October is family history month

By Michael C. Watson

October is National Family History Month in the United States, in Kentucky, in Adair County. This is an excellent opportunity to talk about family history. At time to make sure your family story is remembered for future generations. Now, more than ever, we need to communicate with family members. Researching and documenting our family history is important and a worthwhile way to stay connected.

Talking to kids--whether age nine or fifty-nine--about family genealogy isn't always easy or fun. They may have very little interest in listening to family history that can feel more like a boring history lesson. They don't want to hear about their great-greats, unless they did something "really cool!"
