Lindsey Wilson College celebrates Methodist heritage

The Lindsey Wilson College community celebrated its connection to The United Methodist Church on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, during the annual Church College Celebration Day.

The college - which is affiliated with the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church - held Church College Celebration Day in V.P. Henry Auditorium. Church College Celebration Day was started more than 20 years ago by then-LWC Provost and Dean of the Faculty Walter S. Reuling as an expression of the college's relationship with The United Methodist Church, which dates to LWC's founding in 1903.

The ceremony consisted of songs of worship, scripture readings, a college and church affirmation by LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., and a message by Rev. Mark Dickinson, Superintendent for the South Central District of the Kentucky Conference.

By Daisy Rodriguez

Campbellsville, KY - "I don't want to go home. I never knew what the word peace meant, until this week."

The boy was hiding in the woods because he didn't want to go home.

Harbor Steel & Supply expanding to Bowling Green

By Crystal Staley/Jack Mazurak

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Harbor Steel & Supply Corp., a distributor and manufacturer of fabricated products for the steel and aluminum industries, will construct a second Kentucky facility with an $8 million investment that will create 25 full-time jobs in the years ahead.

"Harbor Steel & Supply has been a quality Kentucky employer for the past 30 years, and I am thrilled to see the company grow its presence in our state," Gov. Beshear said. "This project reflects Kentucky's strength in the metals industry, and it continues the unparalleled economic momentum our state has seen in recent months. I wish the company well as it establishes its second Kentucky facility and hope to see even more growth in the future."

Leaders at Harbor Steel plan to construct a 50,000-square-foot facility in the Kentucky Transpark that will allow for potential future expansion and job creation. The investment will include the purchase of laser machines, press brakes for forming and automated saws, among other equipment. Company leaders anticipate construction will begin in spring 2022 and be completed by the third quarter of next year.

Emergency preparedness - know your neighbors

From Emory Kidd, Director
Metcalfe County Emergency Management

Tips during September preparedness month - know your neighbors. Know who they are, develop a relationship with them and plan to support each other in case of a disaster that strikes you all.

After every disaster, we see the stories of neighbors helping neighbors, not to mention people coming in to help others in their area. Know who may need special assistance in case of emergency, who knows how to "do things." Know their families as well, if you can, know who to call if you don't see a neighbor for a few days.

Mail-in renewal for licenses to be permanent

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Beshear today announced the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will launch a service this Friday to expand options for Kentuckians to renew their state driver's licenses and ID cards remotely through a mail-in renewal program.

"This new era of driver licensing is ushering in expanded services to give Kentuckians more options on how they want to be served," Gov. Beshear said. "The mail-in program builds upon the successful summer launch of Kentucky's first online driver's license renewal service. Both services maximize convenience by helping the majority of cardholders tackle an important to-do on their own time without visiting a licensing office."

The revamped mail-in service is administered solely by KYTC and is one of the modern conveniences available to Kentuckians as a result of the phased transfer of licensing services to KYTC Driver Licensing Regional Offices from local Offices of the Circuit Court Clerks. All counties will transfer services by June 30, 2022. A list of counties that have transferred services to regional offices is available at drive.ky.gov/pages/circuit-clerks.aspx.

Fall landscaping, gardening to-do list

Summer has officially come to a close this month, and that means that it's time to get back to work in the garden. With a little time and planning each fall, we can enjoy better landscaping year after year. A few helpful tips follow:

* Remove faded and droopy summer annuals and replace them with hardier flowers. Pansies can take a beating through a light frost and will provide a splash of color through the fall. Mums are also a great choice.

* Plant any new evergreens now and keep them well-watered until the ground freezes...

Emergency preparedness - food, tools and insurance

From Emory Kidd, Director
Metcalfe County Emergency Management

Tips during September preparedness month: Family gardening and raising chickens or other small livestock can be helpful in emergency situations where food is not plentiful.

Even in urban areas, raising a few chickens or bees, or even goats, is a possibility. And this is Kentucky, after all, hunting is also a way to fill the larder. This might mean you need to learn how to butcher as well.
