Blinkhorn named to CoSIDA NAIA Academic Men's At-Large Team By Christopher Coombs Callum Blinkhorn of the Lindsey Wilson men's golf team was named to the CoSIDA NAIA Academic Men's At-Large Team, an award selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), the organization announced on Tuesday. The native of Culcheth, England held a 3.96-grade point average throughout his History coursework to pick up the honor. Blinkhorn earns the honor based on his academic and athletic success. He was one of 10 men from across the NAIA to be named to the first team. The honor is the second first team selection of his career after picking up the honor last season as he added a second team selection during the 2018-19 season. He is the only Lindsey Wilson men's golfer to ever receive the national recognition. Governor: $600K award to upgrade building in Metcalfe Co. Funding will support Pennington Stave & Cooperage LLC, create 60 jobs By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Edmonton, KY - On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced a $616,900 grant for improvements at a building in the Metcalfe County Industrial Park that will house Pennington Stave & Cooperage LLC (PS&C, LLC). The company will manufacture staves and barrels for bourbon and whiskey production, building on positive momentum in the growing spirits industry in the commonwealth. "Kentucky's economy is on fire, and today's announcement adds to our economic progress by creating more quality jobs in Kentucky," said Gov. Beshear. "Pennington Stave & Cooperage will add to the growth we're seeing in Kentucky's robust spirits industry, especially our signature bourbon industry." Funding comes from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), in addition to $1 million previously awarded from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and $91,000 in local funds, making the project total $1,707,000. The CDBG award funded construction, including the costs of electric, water, concrete, sewer and fixtures in the 30,000-square-foot speculation building that will house the company. The ARC funding will be used for additional utility work and the interior build-out of the building. PS&C LLC will invest $3.5 million in new equipment and create 60 jobs with above-average wages for Kentuckians in the Metcalfe County area. LWC Wrestling 2020-21 Rewind By Kyle Jackson The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team claimed both the Mid-South Conference regular season and north division tournament championship during the 2020-21 campaign. The championship's marked the sixth regular-season title and the third tournament title in the program's history. The Blue Raiders also finished the season with a perfect 12-0 dual record to increase the program's all-time dual record to 110-59. Lindsey Wilson finished in third place at the NAIA National Championship, marking the fifth straight season the Blue Raiders have finished in the top-5 at the event. Letter: Water issues Connie Youngs writes: Am I the only one that is wondering about this? It seems like almost every week there is a mainline water break somewhere in Columbia requiring folks to boil their water for safety. Why does this keep happening?Note: This letter came to us from Connie Youngs with an "s", not to be confused with Connie Young who works at CAUD. We've reached out to CAUD to see if there's any official word on whether local water outages are more frequent than would be expected. LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information 8/2/2021 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 106 since our last report. Our new cases (including suspect cases) are as follows: Adair: 18; Casey: 8; Clinton: 3; Cumberland: 1; Green: 6; McCreary: 4; Pulaski: 46; Russell: 8; Taylor: 10; and, Wayne: 2. Our current new case growth rate is: 1.0032. This means our total case count is projected to double every 216.96 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 12/30/2020 when we added 301 cases. Again, we encourage our citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and very effective. Of our 9,783 new cases since the vaccine started becoming available, almost 97.35% were unvaccinated. Below are our area's COVID-19 vaccination uptake rates compared to the state average.
