Pandemic Unemployment Benefits to end in Ky. Sept. 6

By Kevin Kinnaird

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear today encouraged Kentuckians drawing federal pandemic unemployment insurance benefits to rejoin the workforce before those programs expire Sept. 6.

"With a surging economy and job opportunities available throughout the commonwealth, there isn't a valid reason why any Kentuckian who wants a job shouldn't be able to find one," the Governor said.

Federal pandemic unemployment insurance benefit programs expire nationwide on Sept. 6. Unemployment insurance claimants in Kentucky will no longer be able to claim benefits from the following programs after that date:

Questions for Fiscal Court to consider

Comments about the proposed Kennel Ordinance. See: Changes expected before 2nd reading of Kennel Ordinance

By Joyce Coomer

I have some questions.

1. Instead of this ordinance that would place a financial and physical burden on many residents of the county, why not make an ordinance that requires small animals not bred for food or to generate income to be spayed and/or neutered? TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) can be utilized. Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org) provides plenty of useful information.

2. Why is there a minimum size (25 sq. ft.) given for a kennel for a dog in the "Definitions" section but no specifications other than "freedom of movement" in the main body of the ordinance? A dog 12" tall, 18" long and 9" wide could be housed in a space 18" tall, 30" long and 24" wide; it allows for standing up, lying down, etc., without touching the sides, but no room for much movement such as walking for exercise.

The Blue Raiders went onto the Mid-South Conference Championships where they lost the opening round game to Marian (Ind.) and were put into the consolation bracket. From here Lindsey Wilson won their next match versus Shawnee State (Ohio) before exiting the tournament with a loss coming against Tennessee Wesleyan in the third round.

Letter: Ham radio in Central Kentucky

Harry Mack writes:
Yes, Ham radio exists here in central KY. It actually exists worldwide. First, for the uninitiated, just because someone is talking into a microphone does not make it Ham radio. What many truckers use is what used to be CB radio and is in no way connected to Ham radio.

Ham radio not only uses microphones to communicate but also uses Morse code keys and computers, as well as TVs and other devices. The hobby is so diverse that just about any technical interest is included from just someone talking to another Ham to bouncing signals off of the moon and everything in between.

Locally, we have a club and meet once a month just outside of Columbia. Here is our web page for those that may have more interest: http://wa4uxj.com/
Many of us also belong to our national organization, the American Radio Relay League. Here is that web page: http://www.arrl.org/
The above should get you off to a start and maybe another Ham will add more comments.

Tommy Druen: Olympics season

Previous Column: Duke University is getting it right

By Tommy Druen

It's Olympics season

For the entirety of our lifetimes, we have had this interesting mix of athletic competition and patriotism to capture our attention every four years. And while last year, the prospects of the Tokyo games looked bleak, that pent up pressure is finally being released as we watch athletes from around the world compete in competitions both familiar and foreign to us.

Outside of the Olympic Village though, what is inevitable is the Olympics metaphor. Writers and orators from around the globe will try to make points by utilizing the trials and victories of our world's best athletes. The stories resonate. Even those not typically interested in sports can relate with the people who train their lives for their chance of triumph on the most public of stages.

My pastor, Alan Redditt, is perhaps the most avid fan of the Olympics I know. Without fail, every four years we have a sermon series about the games. And, truthfully, the series is great. I have not only learned about the athletes but been able to see the theological metaphors as well. But Alan was on vacation this past week and our youth pastor, Tim Schindler, delivered the sermon. And while Tim may not be quite as frequent of commenter on the games, he told a story of one Olympian. The story of Eliud Kipchoge has stuck with me and, while not the direction Tim took it, I want to use it as an example as advice for all of us.
