By Chris Taylor, Chief
Campbellsville Fire-Rescue

Campbellsville Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a report of a working structure fire - a structure fire (Wilkerson Apartments), 325 West Broadway.

Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy flames coming out of one apartment and heavy smoke coming out of the entire complex. A second alarm was initiated due to potential life safety issues, heavy fire conditions and heat considerations for rotating personnel. Firefighters made an interior attack while other firefighters were searching and evacuating the other units. Firefighters extinguished the fire and provided overhaul.

Wayne Raney, Casey County, KY (1949-2021)

Wayne Raney, of Casey County, KY departed from this life on Sunday, July 25, 2021 at age 72.

Wayne's life was enriched by friends and staff while he attended "Just Family" in Liberty for eighteen years. His integrity and work ethic was apparent daily in his perfectionist world. His memory was unbelievable. Wayne brought a smile to the room by just walking in. He was never afraid to share his opinion or love for his family and friends. Wayne was kindhearted, had an incredible sense of humor, was an avid UK fan, and was so loved by all who knew him. He was able to teach his family members more about life than life itself. As he closed his eyes to rest in peace, we were able to remind Wayne how much we loved him.

Letter: Worries about inmates during heat wave

Mary Bardin writes:
The heat index has been over 100 degrees. We worry about the workers outside and anyone that has no access to a cooker, safer environment. I pray everyday for the inmates at ACRJ . They haven’t had air conditioning in over 3 months! No where to get cool.

Yes the heat causes dangerous conditions, thus causing critical conditions. I can't even imagine how bad it is when the jail is housing double or triple number of inmates as supposed to accommodate. The ice machine has also been broken , but I suppose ice is a privilege not a right. It seems a safe environment should be a right. I know the air conditioning is being built, and may not be available for months, but surely there can be some type of emergency assistance for our inmates.

Governor announces new K-12 school recommendations

Masks recommended indoors for all children under 12, unvaccinated Kentuckians 12 and older
By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear shared new masking recommendations for K-12 schools in response to the highly contagious COVID-19 delta variant.

"Our priority is our kids," said Gov. Beshear. "How we make decisions has to come from one simple place: What gives us the best chance to have our kids in school the maximum number of days in the midst of a pandemic? That is our North Star."

The Governor was joined by Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman, Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky Department of Education Commissioner Dr. Jason Glass and Kentucky Board of Education Chair Lu Young.

Gov. Beshear and the state officials agreed Kentucky's challenge is that the delta variant spreads quickly and aggressively among unvaccinated people of all ages. Without mitigation efforts, they expect the delta variant will spread through unvaccinated classrooms and throughout buildings resulting in large, frequent quarantines of students and staff.

Therefore, the Governor recommended the following:

Keep Workers Safe in Summer Heat

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet urges employers to recognize the danger of heat stress, related illnesses.

By Kevin Kinnaird

Frankfort, KY - As summer temperatures begin to climb in the commonwealth, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet is reminding employers they have a responsibility to protect employees working in hot conditions.

Heat illnesses can affect anyone, regardless of age or physical condition. Whether working in hot indoor facilities or in direct sunlight, extreme heat can take a toll on workers who perform manual labor.

"Performing physically exhausting work in dangerously hot conditions without proper breaks, water and shade can result in serious illness and even death," Labor Cabinet Secretary Jamie Link said. "The Labor Cabinet reminds employers during the summer months that they are responsible for providing workplaces free of known safety hazards, including extreme heat conditions, pursuant to worker safety laws.

Employers who expose workers to hot working conditions should establish a heat illness prevention program and closely monitor all employees to keep them safe.

Changes expected before 2nd reading of Kennel Ordinance

By Pen Waggener

At their July 13 meeting, the Adair County Fiscal Court heard the first reading of a proposed new ordinance that could "establish standards for the purchase of dog and kennel licenses and to the control of dogs and cats" within Adair County." It appeared on the agenda as Item 10-C, "Cat Ordinance B Discussion".

The proposed ordinance would give the Fiscal Court authority to approve of the design of kennel and cattery facilities, and to impose daily fines when certain standards of care aren't met. As the first draft was written, it would require licenses for anyone with more than 10 dogs, 10 cats, or 10 cats and dogs in combination.

According to Adair County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin, the ordinance came about in part because of multiple complaints received by county officials about a property in a local subdivision, and because of an animal cruelty case in March in which 150 animals were seized from a residence in the county.

The ordinance was drafted for Adair County using some general ideas and definitions from similar measures already enacted in Shelby County, Bourbon County, Pendleton County and Jefferson County.

Click here for the full text of the proposed ordinance as it was read at the July 13 meeting: 20210719152437010-Kennel-Ordinance (PDF)

In the week since the meeting, we've received a lot of letters from citizens who would be affected by the proposed ordinance (we'll post some select ones in coming days). Concerns include the fees involved, what number of animals should require a license, and whether county efforts might be better invested in a "Trap, Neuter, Return" program to control cat populations.

Poem: Reflection on the Pandemic

By James Carmicle
Still I rise and face despair!
The unknown fright faced us all
But would we be able to overcome?
We stopped to think
How to respond to stop the spread
Still I rise and face despair!
My actions spoke louder than my words
And slowly life began to turn
Its face toward a cure that had promise but
With those in despair still leaving us
Others fought to hold on to life
Still I rise and face despair!
How must I continue on
To help, to assist, to care, to concern
Myself as an island that joins
Humanity together to find a way
That unites, that educates, that informs yet
Still I rise and face despair!
Is there hope and light on the path ahead?
