LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 4/8/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Today, for Lake Cumberland, we added fewer cases than for the same period last week, so our 7-day-average incidence rate went down. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data. Our 7-day incidence chart is showing 7 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne; 2 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: McCreary, and Pulaski; 1 county in the "red-critical" range: Casey.

Don't forget that at both the world level and in several states, we are seeing sharp increases in new COVID-19 cases. Therefore, please do not assume that the pandemic is completely behind us and take the vaccine as soon as you can. Also, until the vaccine is widely available, and a significant percentage of the population has taken it, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 2.81%.

Letter: Beautiful flowers and wonders unseen

Yvonne Kolbenschlag writest:
Not only do flowers have beauty . . . but each kind of flower has evolved to lure a pollinator by producing nectar, a sugar-based substance . The pollinators transfer bits of pollen from flower to flower. According to the head of the plant conservation unit at the Museum of Natural History, Gary Krupnick, plants adjust their nectar production to match the needs of their pollinators. For example, small blue borage flowers can replenish their nectar in two minutes. Agave plants, produce nectar only at night. A recent study found that evening primrose is even able to detect the specific sound frequencies of its bee pollinators and when it does, it makes fresh nectar in three minutes to attract them.

This information comes from the December 2020 issue of the SMITHSONIAN magazine, page 84.

Genealogy and History Research Center Update

By LeeAnn Jessee

Due to delayed deliveries of shelves and other furniture, the first day for the Research Center to be open to the public has been moved back one week, to Monday, April 19, 2021.

We regret the inconvenience of this delay, but it is in the best interest of all concerned. We want to be ready and able to assist researchers as well as visitors. Without all our pieces in place, the usefulness of the Center as a whole is limited. An additional week will make the experience more meaningful to all.
