Letter: Changes in language

Vonnie Kolbenschlag writes:
Changes in language are interesting. I remember my dad (in the 1930's) saying 'filling station' for what we today call a gas station or service station. Otherwise, I would not know what a 'filling station' was. (Maybe a good term for a fast food drive through?) Is the place Mike refers to, not actually on Burkesville Street, but in the large lot behind, where Dr. Pepper replaced the Murray Garage? And interesting, to me too, that it was around 1937 that water lines were installed in the city - making a bottling business possible.

Courthouse damage, trucking around the Square

Damage to the historic Adair County Courthouse has generated a healthy discussion among residents and at the first March Fiscal Court meeting. Lee Ann Jessee and Mike Watson were asked to present information on the most recent efforts at restoration done by the Adair Heritage Association. (The Heritage Association is headquartered at the Adair County Public Library and all the research is there.)

Questions under consideration include whether to patch the damaged wing, or, just remove the wing, using the insurance money as partial payment for it. The four wings are not part of the original landmark historic building and opinion polls have shown many would like to see them removed and have the grass restored around the original building.

While Judge Executive Gale Cowan gathers bids for repairs on the building damaged by the Amazon truck, several have put their ideas and questions on the subject in writing and are shared below.

ACHS and ACMS Academic Teams win big at State Championships

By Brett Reliford

Both the Adair County High School and Adair County Middle School Academic Teams have plenty to celebrate after the Governor's Cup State Championship awards ceremony. Both the high school and middle school finished in the Top 10 in Future Problem Solving competition, and Bailey Watts of ACMS placed in the Top 10 in both of her individual events at the competition.

Watts pulled off a rare achievement for the school in earning not just one, but two awards-winning finishes in individual competition, earning 4th overall in Arts and Humanities and 10th in Language Arts. Governor's Cup competition is where all of the academic elite across the state gather to compete head-to-head. Out of every middle school in the state, having one of our own here at Adair County Middle stand out as such a high ranking student in two separate academic areas in the same year is feat that is rarely duplicated in any school at any level.

Both high school and middle school Future Problem Solving teams also battled hard to place among the top schools who had qualified for State Finals to bring home trophies in each of those events as well. Not only were both schools among the Top 10 in Kentucky, their finishes in the competition earned them the right to advance to the FPS World Championships in June.

Governor: Positivity rate declines again as vaccinations increase

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state's lowest positivity rate since July 3, 2020, and updated Kentuckians on COVID-19 vaccinations.

"We've come too far and we've lost too much to mess this up now. So please continue to wear your masks until we get everybody vaccinated," said Gov. Beshear. "And if you're thinking about not taking the vaccine, think harder. Think about all the individuals you can protect. Think about how much they need your help to ensure we can continue what we see today, of fewer and fewer cases and fewer and fewer losses."
