Daylight Saving Time is good time to check for open recalls

By Naitore Djigbenou/Chuck Wolfe

Frankfort, KY - The approach of Daylight Saving Time this Sunday serves as a handy occasion to do more than spring forward. Put fresh batteries in the smoke alarm. Replace air filters. Inspect gutters.

Here's another to-do item: Check whether your car or truck has been recalled for a repair. It's critical for safety, it's easy, and the repairs are free.

"Check To Protect," a campaign by the National Safety Council (NSC), allows drivers to search online for open repair recalls on their vehicles. Go to www.checktoprotect.org and enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The search will yield a list of potential open recalls.

Vehicle owners also can text "RECALL" to 99724 - or, for Spanish speakers, text "REVISA" to 99724 - and snap a picture of the license plate when prompted. Either way, if a recall is identified for the vehicle, drivers can call a local dealer to schedule a free repair.

Lane Kelsay among winners announced in KDA art contest

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles has announced the winners of the Kentucky Pollinator Stakeholders art contest, including Adair Countian Lane Kelsay, who took Third Place among Ages 12-14 for his entry, "Bee Pollination."

The student art contest, with the theme "Pollinators and Their Floral Hosts in Kentucky," was designed to educate the public on the benefits of pollinators and encourage behaviors that promote pollinator habitats across Kentucky.

"This contest allowed children from across the commonwealth to spread that message in the most colorful, vibrant, and artistic ways imaginable," Commissioner Quarles said. "In agriculture, we know the importance of pollinators; they are essential to the production of food and fiber. It was a pleasure to see how the participants displayed that importance in their art."

Youth aged 5-18 were invited to participate and entered 288 art pieces focusing on the state's wide variety of flowers and plants and the pollinators that visit them.

Adair Fiscal Court Meeting March, 2021 - Report

Adair County Fiscal Court met March 9, 2021 at the Jim Blair Center instead of the Courthouse Annex in order to allow extra space for social distancing and avoid crowding.

Recycling and roadside cleanup were on the agenda. Bridget Compton, Solid Waste Coordinator, asked the Magistrates to decide whether to apply for either of two grants available - the Hazardous Household Waste and E-scrap Grant which the court granted permission to go ahead and apply for, and a recycling grant which they declined due to the uncertain future of the Recycling Center.

Will non-profit organizations clean roadsides for $50 per mile?

Pursuit on I-65 ends with the recovery of a stolen vehicle

By Trooper First Class Scotty R. Sharp

Elizabethtown, KY - A pursuit starting near Elizabethtown ends on I-65 with the recovery of a stolen vehicle reported out of Frankfort, KY. On Wednesday, March 10, 2021, around 1:40amET, a Kentucky State Police trooper observed a 2012 Dodge Avenger traveling southbound on I-65 near the commercial vehicle scales traveling at 110 mph. Troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, however the vehicle refused to stop and continued southbound on I-65.

As the pursuit continued south, with speeds reaching 118 mph, the vehicle exited at the Upton exit and reentered onto I-65 going back northbound. Elizabethtown Police Department was successful in deflating the vehicle's tires with tire deflation devices at the 91 mile-marker causing the vehicle to slow down where it eventually stopped at the 93 mile-marker. Troopers and EPD officers were able to apprehend four juveniles without further incident.

All four juveniles were later lodged in the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center in Bowling Green. The investigation is ongoing by Trooper Jonathan Downs with the KSP DESI West Interdiction Unit. KSP was assisted by the Elizabethtown Police Department and the Hardin County Sheriff's Office.

Shanti Niketan Hospice House opens in Glasgow

By Stacey Biggs

The T.J. Community Mission Foundation Board members are pleased to announce the opening of the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home. The 10,400 square foot facility is located at 1020 Glenview Drive and includes 8 inpatient rooms with the capacity to expand to 12 rooms if needed, kitchen and living spaces, private areas for families and guests along with access to a private patio. The hospice home is designed to provide comfort, counseling and support to a patient with life-limiting illnesses and their family.

In 2015 the board of directors of the T. J. Community Mission Foundation identified a critical need in our community for a residential hospice home for patients facing end-of-life care and where families can seek a place of comfort, counseling, and compassionate treatment in a home-like setting.

The name Shanti Niketan was selected by lead philanthropic supporter, Dr. Bharat Mody. In his native language, Shanti means "inner peace." The full name translates to "a peaceful place."

Carol Perkins: Cures for sleepless nights part 2, the pacifier

Previous Column: Cures for sleepless nights

By Carol Perkins

A baby who sleeps through the night is rare. That is why parents readily accept suggestions from those who have been in their shoes and read how-to-books on the topic.

One device that helps babies relax is the pacifier. We know they automatically stick things in their mouth, whether their hand, a toy, a cracker on the floor, or their thumb. Some parents (in my day) feared it might cause buck teeth or create other oral issues.

Back in the 60s and 70s, this fear had merit because the pacifier was rubber (made of things we wouldn't want a baby to gnaw on today) with a plastic shield and plastic ring. If a child fell on it, he could mash his mouth or lose a tooth. Since then, the pacifier has gone through many changes.

The first year or two of a baby's life are the pacifier years.

Cappe records career-high 11 strikeouts against Shawnee State

By Kyrin Mayfield

The Lindsey Wilson baseball team resumed Mid-South Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Shawnee State (OH) at Egnew Park on Thursday. It was the team's third and fourth games in just three days.

Game 1: Lindsey Wilson - 12 | Shawnee State - 3
After scoring 15 runs in the Blue Raiders' previous contest against No. 11 Indiana University Southeast on Wednesday, Lindsey Wilson's offense remained hot in game one, but not immediately.

Starting pitcher Brady Cappe kept the Bears at bay over the first six innings by limiting Shawnee State to just one run, which was a solo home run by Jacob Kline in the top of the third for a 1-0 lead by the Bears.
