Birds of Kentucky: Female House Finch

2021-03-10 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
All About Birds says "The House Finch was originally a bird of the western United States and Mexico. In 1940 a small number of finches were turned loose on Long Island, New York, after failed attempts to sell them as cage birds ('Hollywood finches'). They quickly started breeding and spread across almost all of the eastern United States and southern Canada within the next 50 years."

Senate eyes vision tests for drivers renewing licenses

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - A bill that would require vision screenings for Kentucky drivers renewing their licenses advanced out of the Senate Transportation Committee today.

"This is a very common-sense piece of legislation that will save lives by ensuring Kentuckians have the necessary visual acuity to operate motor vehicles," Rep. Kimberly Poore Moser, R-Taylor Mill, said of the legislation, known as House Bill 439. "Forty-two states have requirements for vision screenings during driver's license renewals ... including Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia."

Currently, Kentucky only requires vision screenings for new drivers.

Governor: Positivity rate decreases again

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state's positivity rate decreased again, to 3.93%, as more Kentuckians receive one of three highly effective COVID-19 vaccines and continue to follow guidance from public health officials.

"We still have far too many deaths reported today - 34 - but I'm happy to see our positivity rate continue to decrease," said Gov. Beshear. "This shows we're stepping up to do what it takes to protect each other until we cross the finish line."

Yesterday, the Governor also extended an executive order prohibiting price-gouging in the commonwealth.

Whittlers of by-gone eras, and the museum that wasn't

By JIM

Ninety-five year ago this week -- on Tuesday, March 9, 1926 -- the Adair County News carried a front page article about the artwork of an Adair Countian:

"More work from the skilled artist, Mr. Sam Judd, is now on exhibition at Wyatt Conover's York Trail Cafe [on the square].

"It is attracting the attention of all passers. 'The Vanishing American, who is seated upon a horse, the rider's head bent low, shows that only sorrow is passing through the heart of the rider who has been banished from his beloved country. The picture, as Mr. Judd has whittled it, is perfect...

"This picture will exhibit here April 8th and 9th. See it when it comes."

From the description, Mr. Judd's work may have been similar to James Earle Fraser's well known "End of the Trail" sculpture. "This picture," referenced in the last paragraph, was the recently-released Paramount Pictures photoplay, "The Vanishing American," another story of Native American oppression, wending its way to Columbia.

The previous September, Mr. Judd had "knocked the plum" and won the premium in the whittling contest at the Kentucky State Fair. Said The News, "The piece of work presented by him was a wheelbarrow rolled by a teddy bear and in the wheelbarrow was a watermelon, all whittled by Mr. Judd with his pocket knife."

Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.
