Keeping bird feeders clean reduces risk of salmonella outbreaks Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Frankfort, KY - Kentuckians are encouraged to pay special attention to their backyard bird feeders after recent tests found salmonella in several deceased songbirds collected from Bullitt, Calloway and Washington counties. In response to recent reports from the public, the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources collected several deceased pine siskins from the counties and submitted them to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study lab in Athens, Georgia. Tests confirmed the presence of salmonella in several of the birds. "We are experiencing a higher than normal incidence of salmonella outbreaks at bird feeders this year," said Dr. Christine Casey, state wildlife veterinarian for the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "This has also been observed elsewhere in the United States. We would like to remind the public to clean feeders regularly to avoid spreading salmonella and other germs. Cleaning feeders frequently is always important when feeding birds. Feeders should be cleaned at least every two weeks with a 5- to 10-percent bleach solution and rinsed to remove any of the solution." If you notice sick or dead birds by your feeder, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife recommends: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2021-03-09 08:18:54 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Ky Afield Outdoors
CPE: Growing demand for college graduates in education jobs By Sue Patrick Kentucky's education workforce is expected to grow 3% over the next decade. However, colleges and universities need to train thousands of more teachers to address shortfalls in schools and help increase diversity among educators. The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education unveiled those findings this week as part of an in-depth look at the state's public and private education sector. The report shows that, overall, the education field is on pace to support close to 93,300 jobs in Kentucky by 2030. The state is already facing shortages in the education workforce, which includes teachers, administrators and counselors, and those gaps could potentially grow larger unless Kentucky produces more workers with degrees in education. The report projects that annual job openings will exceed the number of new graduates with at least a bachelor's degree in education by more than 2,200 jobs by the end of the decade. LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 3/8/2021 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department We added fewer cases today than last Monday. This is particularly impressive since last week we added Sunday and Monday cases on Monday and this week we added Saturday, Sunday, and Monday cases today. So, things are looking good with the new case rate. We have 1 county in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Cumberland; 8 counties in the "orange-critical" range of community-spread: Adair, Casey, Clinton, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, and Wayne; and only 1 county in the "red-critical" range of community-spread: Taylor. Please, do not become complacent with observing the guidance just because things are looking up. The last thing we need is to give this virus a chance to take off again. The federal and state public health officials are saying everyone who wants the vaccine should be able to have at least their first dose by the end of May. So, until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces. Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 4.06%. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2021-03-09 02:50:13 | Comments | Printable version
