Letter: Need solutions, not complaints, about litter By Vonnie Kolbenschlag Where I live, there is regular garbage pick-up. Where some people live, there is no regular garbage pick-up. Most products we buy come in plastic, paper or cardboard. Many containers should not be burned - as was possible in the "old days" before Styrofoam and many kinds of plastic products we have now. Burning such produces toxic smoke. Once we had recycling trailers for paper, plastic, cardboard. They had to be removed because some people put their garbage in . . . dirty diapers, partially eaten food, containers with hazardous liquids, cigarette stubs . . . Someone at the Recycling Center had to go through all that to retrieve the paper, plastic and cardboard. Same thing happened with other recycle containers we once had - people used them for garbage disposal. So, now garbage ends up on our roads. We write about the condition of our roadways that are littered. Is there a way to provide garbage service throughout the county? Yes, it would probably mean a service charge - it's the price of civilized living. In some places people pay a recycling fee in addition to garbage collection fees. Since conditions of our landscape may impact the possibility of potential businesses locating here, I suggest that solutions be considered by our Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Boards and that their ideas be reported to our county magistrates. We need solutions, not complaints. 2021-03-08 18:38:15 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Governor: 25% of KY adults have received a COVID-19 vaccine Eighth straight week of declining cases; positivity rate has declined to 4.06% By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Beshear announced 834,130 Kentuckians - 25% of Kentucky adults - have now received at least one dose of one of three highly effective COVID-19 vaccines. Gov. Beshear also announced Kentucky has now seen eight straight weeks of declining COVID-19 cases. Today's COVID-19 report includes the lowest number of new cases since Sept. 14. "This is the exact type of trajectory we want to see as we are vaccinating people," said Gov. Beshear. "This is in many ways a race against time against the variants. If we can continue that downward trajectory while increasing the number of people vaccinated, we can hopefully get to the end of this thing sooner rather than later. The President has made a promise that all adults who want to be vaccinated will be able to get their first shot by at least the end of May."
