Phillip Coffey - Raising a Rue-Cuss

By Phillip Coffey

Dancing to the Grand Ole Opry at about age three.
Listening to the radio while visiting 'Cousin Opheus'.
Only a couple 'hollers' over - walk a short distance.
Ninety plus years later still 'raising a 'rue-cuss.'

'Never giving up' - the stories Mom repeatedly tells.
Brothers' cat skinning - sawing off chicken heads
Heart of an Angel - fearless as an aging Lioness
Greatest Generation numbers dwindling - last one, I dread.

Kentucky Division of Emergency Management Director Michael Dossett said 49 cities and counties have declared states of emergency.

"We have reached out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and asked FEMA Region 4 to send their lead investigator to the state of Kentucky to look at the homes that were damaged and those that have been inundated," said Director Dossett. "This is truly a record-breaking event. The water is still high, and this is not over."

Wholesale Hardwood Interiors announces plans to rebuild

Operation experienced near total loss following major fire in December. $7.1 million investment will create 100 full-time jobs

By Crystal Staley/Jack Mazurak

Frankfort, KY - Three months ago, disaster struck Wholesale Hardwood Interiors Inc. in Campbellsville, when a fire broke out at the facility resulting in a near total loss. Today, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the company is moving forward with plans to invest $7.1 million and create 100 full-time jobs, restoring the operation with additional space to accommodate recent and future growth.

The Campbellsville headquarters is home to the company's office, warehouse and manufacturing business, providing high-quality interior wood products, such as mouldings, custom millwork, doors and stair parts.

Only 20,000 square feet of the 120,000-square-foot facility was partially salvaged following the fire in December, with operations deemed a total loss. The company, now back in operation, plans to fully re-establish production with construction of a facility at the same location on the Campbellsville Bypass. Company leaders anticipate the facility to be functional immediately and fully operational within 12 to 18 months.

"Wholesale Hardwood Interiors Inc. has built its success and reputation upon dedication to high standards of quality, service and integrity," said Mike Judd, president of WHI. "We are truly grateful for all of the assistance that we have received and are continuing to receive. This assistance, along with a truly dedicated group of employees and sales representatives, ensures that the best is yet to come."

Letter: Agree with Glen Wilham

Marie Freeman writes:
I think it would be great for the truck drivers so that they realize a hazard for them to be downtown. It's not just an inconvenience for the people downtownk it's dangerous for an 18 wheeler to try to make that turn downtown.

In the old days of being able to read an atlas made a big difference. But only the old-timers remember how to do that I think now :-) My first trip down 119 between Harlem and Whitesburg before they closed it to commercial vehicles, I certainly wish it would've already been closed! It's called Kingdom Come Highway. The logger that help me back down the mountain that I followed we had actually get on the CB and say we were coming around the mountain curve there was no where for the other truck, except off the mountain.

I told him they named the highway Kingdom Come Highway because I said the Lords prayer the whole way down the mountain.

So agree it would be beneficial for the driver to know and have a sign posted there. I have to say I did look at the atlas before I made the trip to Whitesburg. It was long before cell phones or GPS. I had been to Harlem before on 119 and it wasn't bad, look to be the shortest route. Past Harlem there's not even a guard rail and a hairpin turn around every mountain curve. Beautiful, would be pretty in a car. By the way I didn't go back that way LOL. --Marie

Re: Banning commercial vehicles downtown

Kevin Knifley writes:
A few years back I was forced off Lampton Lane due to a semi coming through the sharp curves. Vehicles that long simply cannot navigate curves like those without taking the entire road. Wasn't a huge deal but my concern was for other drivers, perhaps younger ones that might not react accordingly, or a school bus for obvious reasons. I reached out to the KY Dept of Highways about the possibility of banning semis on Lampton Lane and was essentially told that would be against the law due to the tax structure.

As for the bypass, everyone needs to keep in mind its design flaws. It is only beneficial to trucks either traveling east on the Parkway or north on 61 from Burkesville, and in those opposite directions.

The majority of truckers coming west into Columbia headed north will continue to cut through town. And as long as they do they will use their engine brakes on Jamestown Hill. Had an intersection been connected directly to the parkway, more Commercial drivers coming into Columbia from the east would definitely use it. So in short - it's the governments' fault(s).

Letter: Signage helps truckers

Glen Wilham writes:
I drove a truck for many years throughout 48 states. One of the things I saw a lot would be a sign at each end of a by-pass showing "Truck Route" using that road, and a sign on the other road indicating "Local Deliveries Only," with a picture of a truck on both signs.

Being able to read and understand the Truckers Road Atlas is still one of the best things.
