Phillip Coffey - Happy birthday to my wife

”Upbringing Not Solid “
Poem to my wife, Billie Slaven Coffey, on her birthday

Raised by a toothless, old hound and a tree stump setter
He up and started out to leave his ill fame and misfortune
Discovering that to get ahead he really needed a fine education
Kinfolks implied- “Why not one of those schools in Massachusetts?”

Sure was a difficult enterprise to enter - no pathway could he follow
What should he do- others writing about his laden discomforts
that he encountered in his unsheltered life - upbringing not solid
Low and behold until was found close kin had once attended Harvard.

Blue Raiders hold Bears to just 80 total yards

By Kyrin Mayfield

For just the third time in program history, the Lindsey Wilson football team kept their opponent off the scoreboard with a 49-0 route over Pikeville (KY) on Friday at Blue Raider Stadium. The victory marks the Blue Raiders eighth straight season-opening win.

After the opening kickoff, the Bears marched down to the Blue Raiders 32-yard line before Lindsey Wilson held Pikeville to four consecutive plays with no gain and received possession after a turnover on downs.

Eleven plays later, Jaylen Boyd juked his way into the endzone from three yards out to give the Blue Raiders an early 7-0 lead and the only score of the first 15 minutes.

That touchdown was the beginning of 49 unanswered points for Lindsey Wilson as the team crossed the goal line twice in each of the next three quarters.

Weekend weather update

At 9amCT, the National Weather Service in Louisville issued a Special Weather Statement for an area including Adair, Casey, Cumberland, and Russell Couties about the chance for patchy freezing drizzle.

Light freezing drizzle and reduced visibilities to around 1 to 2 miles will continue to be possible through the morning hours. A light glaze is possible on untreated surfaces and slick spots may develop on roadways, overpasses, and bridges. Slow down and use caution when traveling.

In addition, the National Weather Serice issued a Winter Storm Watch at 2:52amCT because a major winter storm is expected to affect all of Central Kentucky Sunday night through Tuesday.

This winter storm will bring two waves of wintry precipitation to the region Sunday night through Tuesday. There could be significant accumulations of snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain. The heaviest precipitation is expected to occur Monday afternoon into Monday night.

Travel could be difficult to impossible at times, and power outages are possible due to snow and previous ice accumulations on trees and power lines.

KYTC crews deploying Sunday morning for anti-icing operations

By Wes Watt

Bowling Green, KY - The snow & ice operations team for Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 3--which serves counties including Barren, Edmonson, Metcalfe, Monroe, and Warren Counties--has ordered anti-icing operations to begin Sunday morning in preparation of a possible winter weather system moving through the area beginning Sunday night. Trucks will be putting down brine on major routes and motorists are asked to give the anti-icing vehicles plenty of space.

Brine is a mixture of salt, water and liquid calcium that coats the roadway which lowers the freezing temperatures of the road. Anti-icing can prolong the time it takes for ice to form on the roadway giving extra time for salt trucks to put out salt.

Carwile tells students to build life on the foundation of Jesus

By Scarlett Birge

Campbellsville, KY - "You must recognize that if you do not build your house upon the solid rock of Jesus, you will have nothing to stand on," Dr. Joel Carwile, member of the Campbellsville University Board of Trustees and senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Athens, AL, said.

Carwile, speaking at The Vine Feb. 2, read from Matthew 7:24-27, saying to build the foundation of life on Jesus in order to persevere through any adversity. He said the two choices in life are to build on the rock of Jesus or to build on the sand of Satan.

Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added fewer new cases today than last Friday, so our 7-day average incidence rate went down slightly. However, all our counties are back in the "red-critical" range of community spread. So, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 6.95%.

Governor: Lowest positivity rate since Nov 6

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the state's positivity rate declined again to 6.95%, the lowest rate since Nov. 6.

"It looks like we're going to have fewer cases than last week which would give us five straight weeks of declining cases. The positivity rate also continues to decline," said Gov. Beshear. "This says you're doing the right things and we're headed in the right direction. But even if you've been vaccinated, we have to continue to wear masks and social distance until we can defeat this thing once and for all."
