Campbellsville University remembers Dr. W.R. Davenport

By Joan C. McKinney

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. W.R. Davenport, president of Campbellsville College from 1969 to 1988, died Wednesday, Feb. 10 at his home following an extended illness. He was 95 years old.

Dr. H. Keith Spears, interim president of Campbellsville University, said Davenport was "a stalwart that kept this institution moving during tough times. He was a solid rock that provided a foundation on which the success of CU rests today."

Davenport served Campbellsville College (now Campbellsville University) during one of "the college's most difficult times," according to the university's history book written by the late Dr. J. Chester Badgett.

The history book said: "He inherited a tremendous debt when enrollments were falling, with fewer military personnel attending under the G.I. bill, and fewer students graduating from high school."

"The trustees recognized that he had rendered invaluable service to the college, and that at his retirement the college was a thriving institution in a much-improved financial state," Badgett wrote.

Adair Fiscal Court first February 2021 meeting report

Coverage by Vicky Pike

Nine people were in the audience at the first Adair County Fiscal Court meeting in February. Revenue options were on the agenda for the second time. The public had assumed taxes would be added but after hearing from constituents the Magistrates said they'd decided not to do so at this time.

As a way to begin cutting costs, they voted to close the Adair County Recycling Center after reportedly having lost $10,000 this budget year. They will move one of the employees from there to the road department where the road fund is in good shape. The position will be for litter pick up.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Recreated from what seen

A sonnet for the birthday of Clara Elizabeth Ellis
There was a time I might have seen your face
but on that day you were not feeling well,
so left still hoping for some meeting place
but soon unmet life’s final curtain fell.

I have the messages that we exchanged
too few but strands as strong as tempered steel
that undergird the stories now arranged
in memories perhaps more faux than real.

What nature lovers see beneath the sun
is recreated from what seen that morn
in drawings, photographs, and paintings done
by talented within your lineage born.

Time passing lessens opportunity,
what almost was becomes what cannot be.
- Robert Stone, 11 February 2021

Quarles praises Hunger Initiative legislation

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles praised the Kentucky House of Representatives for passing legislation yesterday aimed at expanding eligibility for game meat donations.

House Bill 209, sponsored by Representative Jonathan Dixon, R-Henderson, would allow the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Agency, the Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension Program, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife to receive and donate game meat for the purpose of food distribution and cooking demonstrations for those in need.

The bill came about after the University of Kentucky's Nutrition Education Program identified concerns about lawsuits associated with distributing meals with donated wild game at educational cooking classes for food bank clients.

"Our laws already allow game meat donation to non-profits so they can redistribute meat to families in need," Dixon said. "This bill simply allows the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Agency, the Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension Program, and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife to take part in efforts to fight hunger. In addition, many of our extension agencies offer cooking classes and do tremendous work in educating needy families about ways they can make cost-effective healthy meals at home. It's important we give these entities the support they need in that effort."

Eviction Relief Fund can provide rent, utility assistance

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - In partnership with the Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), Gov. Andy Beshear relaunched the Healthy at Home Eviction Relief Fund on Thursday, with an additional $264 million to keep Kentuckians safe and housed throughout the pandemic.

Starting February 15, 2021, tenants who qualify can apply for rent and utility assistance to cover their past-due and future bills. If approved, lump sum, direct payments will be made to landlords and utility providers.

All of the funds will offer the same benefits to approved applicants - 100% of past-due rent, dating back to April 2020 - and up to three months of future payments.

Those applying through the Team Kentucky portal also can receive help with past-due and future utility bills. More information is available at teamkyhherf.ky.gov.

LCDHD: TJ Health Columbia announced as regional vaccine site

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 2/11/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added fewer cases today than last Thursday, so our 7-day average incidence rate lowered slightly. Cumberland remains our only county in the "orange-critical" range of community-spread. The remaining 9 counties are in the "red-critical" range of community spread.

As I listened to the Governor's update today, I noted at least 3 new vaccination sites for our area:
  • TJ Health Columbia as a regional hub
  • Campbellsville Kroger as a pharmacy site
  • Campbellsville Wal-mart as a pharmacy site
I am in the process of verifying this, along with the contact information and the weekly supply. I'll update the "vaccine" section of our Daily Brief once all of the needed information is obtained.
