Letter: Why is caution still required after vaccination Jana Esch asks: If masks and social distancing are required after the vaccination, then what exactly is the vaccination for, if not for the protection from the virus?Getting vaccinated is just one more tool you have to protect yourself. The currently available vaccines take some time to start working, and the amount of protection grows the more other people have been vaccinated too, which will take time. Shoes and socks can be protections from the cold, but sometimes, when it's very cold, you might also put on an extra shirt, or a coat, or even a scarf and gloves. Even those could fail if it's too cold outside, or other people insist on leaving the door open. Eventually, vaccinations will probably be enough on their own. In the meantime, you can keep yourself safer by using more than one method to protect yourself. 2021-02-06 14:21:42 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Tax filing season begins February 12 By Jill Midkiff Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) is in the process of finalizing its tax filing processes and procedures, striving to make this the most efficient and safe filing season possible. The IRS recently announced it will begin accepting electronic and paper federal individual income tax returns on February 12, 2021. Kentucky will follow the same timeline and begin accepting and processing state returns on the same date, which is later than usual due to additional programming and testing of IRS systems. Electronic individual income tax returns typically take two to three weeks to process and refunds can be expected to be issued shortly thereafter. Taxpayers may check the status of their refund by visiting refund.ky.gov and entering their Social Security number and exact dollar amount of the expected refund. Due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic public health recommended precautions, please note DOR has reduced the number of employees at its physical office locations. While DOR will make every effort to process returns as quickly and efficiently as possible, the processing of all refunds may be slightly delayed due to the unusually late start of the IRS filing season. LCDHD: Adair drops out of red (slightly) LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 2/5/2021 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department Starting next week, the health departments will be closed on Sundays. As long as we can keep up with case investigations, contact tracing, releases, and vaccination clinics, we are going to make an effort to give our staff consistently one day off per week. This means there will not be a Daily Brief on Sundays. A close look at our date will appear the Casey and Clinton's numbers are off today. This is because we moved one case from Casey to Clinton today. We are glad to report no new deaths today. We did, however, have just a few more new cases today than last Friday, so our district seven-day average incidence rate did go up slightly. Nine of our district's 10 counties remain in the "red-critical" range of community-spread. Adair is in the "orange-accelerated" range. This is the first time in several weeks we have had any county drop out of the "red-critical" range. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces. State agencies provide ID cards for state inmates By Morgan Hall Frankfort, KY - Today, the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet announced the launch of a two-year project developed through a multi-agency collaboration to provide state ID cards for Kentucky's justice-involved population. The joint partnership between the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Transportation Cabinet, with funding assistance from the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, will allow inmates being released from state custody to walk out of prison with a state ID card in hand. Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Mary C. Noble said leaving prison without an official form of state identification is a significant barrier that the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Department of Corrections have been working to solve for many years. Without an official state ID, the justice-involved population faces many hurdles preventing successful reintegration into the community such as obtaining housing, employment, and financial resources. "Early last year, we began working with Gov. Beshear to correct this continuing issue," said Secretary Noble. "Our cabinet partnered with the Transportation Cabinet, which oversees legal IDs and drivers' licenses, and together we strategized about how we could quickly and effectively provide this basic necessity to inmates as they are released from prison. We were shortly joined in these efforts by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. This collaboration has provided a very positive result for our state." In addition to providing financial support, the Chamber's "Second Chance Employment Guide" will be provided to inmates upon release with their state ID.
