Broersma sets LWC swimming record at MSC Championships

By Brady Budke

Kingsport, TN - Maaike Broersma broke her own previous school record in the 100-yard backstroke today at the Mid-South Conference Women's Swimming Championships, as the Lindsey Wilson women's swimming team remains in third place moving into the final day of action tomorrow. LWC, who has earned 251 team points, remains behind Cumberlands (KY) (leader with 514 points) and Indiana Wesleyan (second place with 451 points).

The original school record Broersma had in the 100-yard backstroke was set on Oct. 30 this season against Asbury, which was tabbed at 57.49. Broersma successfully beat that record time in the preliminaries today, touching the wall in 57.04 to qualify for the A-final. However, in the A-final, Broersma swam an even faster mark of 56.33 to win the A-final race alongside breaking her preliminaries record. She earns first team all-conference honors and a pair of A-cut standards for her performance.

Dinosaur? See a fish, bird obviously, and a pen. Now I want to add to former comments; a cat in the middle of photo and a monkey sitting in a tree.

Sherrie Jo Smith writes:
I love the reflection of the trees in the water. A moment in time of being with a peaceful feeling Mother Nature gives us. I looked around the photo and then I zoomed in to the reflection of the trees. I saw a dogs reflection in the tree tops. Thank you Billy Joe for a beautiful photograph.

Letter: Vaccine supply is limited

We appreciate the hard work Gary put into his analysis below, but a mea culpa is required, because LCDHD do, in fact, publish their charts of COVID statistics every single day, and we don't want them blamed for our editorial decision. We've only posted them to Columbia Magazine every 3-7 days because that seemed more than sufficient for readers to stay up to date on area trends. We apologize for any confusion this might have caused to readers. A wealth of up-to-date information is always available at www.lcdhd.org. --Pen

Gary Rose writes:

Let us talk numbers since the LCDHC likes to do that. 4,000 doses of vaccine, sounds great, but that is for 10 counties. Assuming that each county will be getting equal doses each county will be getting 400 doses. Doing a google search for the population of each county in the LCDHD, the population of the district is 209,475 based on the US Census Bureau. Assuming that the doses will be distributed by county population then Adair County with a population of 19,222 (9.18% of LCDHD population) will be getting 367 doses. Pulaski county with a population of 64,979 which is 31.02% of the LCDHD will be getting 1241 doses.

In another article dated 2021-01-23 from the LCDHD it read "Currently, the state is only getting about 50,000 doses per week to spread across a population of about 4.5 million." 50,000 doses a week, sounds like a lot, but at that rate, it will take 90 weeks to vaccinate the state with just one dose. For two doses it becomes 180 weeks or 3.46 years. Some people have had both doses while the majority are still waiting to get their first.

Happy Birthday, Robert Stone!

Happy birthday to our adopted Columbian, writer Robert Stone, who helps us start each day in a thoughtful way. His Haiku on this 36th day of 2021 reminds us that what was once easy... can change.

Born in Lebanon, Tennessee, Robert still lives two miles from his birthplace. He went to school at Cumberland College, George Peabody College, Fisk, Vanderbilt, UT Nashville, and Nashville State Technical Institute.

He wrote poetry and a regular column when in college but then stopped writing through his work career until he started doing the review of Horse Cave Theater where he was discovered by CM editor Ed Waggener who asked him to share. And the rest is in the archives - just search Robert Stone and enjoy reading.

By Stacey Biggs

T.J. Regional Health has been approved as a regional vaccine site for those aged 70 and older in Phase 1B. We will be receiving 500 vaccines in the coming days. We will begin calling the first 500 of those who have signed up on the waiting list to schedule appointments. We will continue to call 500 people per week to schedule their vaccine appointments to align with our vaccine allocations. You must have an appointment to get a vaccination.

If you have already signed up on the waiting list via our hotline or online form, please know that we have your information and there is no need to call to sign up again. We will call you to schedule your appointment as soon as possible. If you are Phase 1A (Healthcare Workers) or Phase 1B (70+, K-12 Personnel, or First Responders) and have not signed up for the waiting list, you may go online to tjregionalhealth.org/vaccine to sign up at any time.

"We are grateful to be selected as a regional vaccine distribution location and fulfill our commitment to offer the vaccine to the communities we serve. We have a process in place and will schedule appointments starting next week. We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to our leaders at the state for communicating and coordinating this historic process." - TJRH CEO, Neil Thornbury

KSP tackles traffic enforcement on Super Bowl Sunday

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Police are preparing for the big game by participating in Operation C.A.R.E (Crash Awareness Reduction Effort) on Super Bowl Sunday. KSP, along with law enforcement across the country, will have increased visibility on interstates and highways to keep drivers safe.

KSP troopers and officers will put a high emphasis on all traffic enforcement violations, including speeding, failure to wear seat belts, impaired and distracted driving. During this one-day nationwide blitz, troopers across the country will have the same team goal in mind - keeping motorists safe.

"One crash is too many and its important Kentuckians stay safe while they are traveling. We urge people to celebrate at home in lieu of going out on the roads. If you should host a Super Bowl party, have a game plan and designate a sober driver for your guests," said KSP Spokesperson Sergeant Billy Gregory.
