Governor, KY DOE to help schools reopen in some form March 1 By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Kentucky is on track to become the first state to vaccinate educators. "Our vaccination efforts right now are exciting to see. You walk into one of our vaccination centers and you see a workforce that is inspired," said Gov. Beshear. "It is moving. You see people clearly walking around with purpose. You see faith in action. And you see people who have worked long shifts who are still smiling when that next person sits down." The Governor said reopening schools is a top priority, but density control, masking, proper ventilation and community mitigation must be in place. Gov. Beshear said he is working with the Kentucky Department of Education to create a plan where all schools can reopen for some form of in-person learning March 1. But, he noted that through the end of this school year, all schools will need to have a virtual option for parents who choose it. Letter: Vaccine for Seniors F. Tillery writes: Why is no vaccine available for seniors 60, 70, 80. 90 and above? The school employees had no problems getting vaccine, why is there not enough for seniors. The positivity rate in KY is going up while the rate in IN. is going down. IN followed C.D.C guidelines when to vaccine seniors, KY ran school personnel ahead of seniors. I guess healthy 25+ school personnel are more important than 70+ seniors. WHEN ARE SENIORS IN KY GOING TO BE VACCINED OR IS ANOTHER SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP GOING TO BE VACCINED AHEAD OF THEM AGAIN! 2021-02-03 19:31:56 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Carol Perkins: Day Trips Previous Column: Carol Perkins: National Religious Freedom Day By Carol Perkins I printed a copy of a Kentucky map with the county seats and crossed out the cities we had either driven through or visited. Several of the extreme Eastern Kentucky cities had not been in my path. If I have been to Jackson or Paintsville, I don't remember. One close to home that I had never been to was Leitchfield, so last Saturday we set off to explore the town from our car. Like other small towns, the courthouse consumed the square with old buildings surrounding it. Most of them were closed or housed thrift stores. I noticed an old hotel that dated back to the eighteen hundreds and wondered what life would have been like inside. Glamorous guests in flowing skirts and men in top hats, I'm sure. Our tour didn't take long, but the drive was worth the delicious meal at the Farmer's Feedmill Restaurant. Social distancing was enforced, servers wore masks AND gloves, and the people obeyed the rules. Next door was the family meat market, but it was closed by the time we finished. Sometimes a quick trip can take the blues out of a sunny day. The trip to Red River Gorge a few weeks ago was more adventurous. Kentucky worker injury rate hits record low By Kevin Kinnaird Frankfort, KY - The state's recordable, nonfatal occupational injury and illness rate has fallen to the lowest point on record, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet announced today. The total recordable incidence rate for all industries fell to the lowest level since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) began recording the data in 1996, according to the Kentucky Labor Cabinet Occupational Safety and Health Program annual report. The fiscal year 2020 rate, based on 2019 BLS data, was 3.2 cases per 100 full-time equivalent workers. Kentucky's rate in 1996 was 8.4, when BLS began recording the data. Kentucky's incidence rate still remains slightly higher than the national average of 3.0, but the state has made strides toward closing the gap in recent years. The incidence rate was 4.5 in 2014, 3.8 in 2015, 3.7 in 2016, 3.4 in 2017, 3.3 in 2018, and 3.4 in 2019. KSP: Angel Initiative responds to drug epidemic amidst pandemic By Sgt. Billy Gregory Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Angel Initiative is a proactive program designed to help people battle addiction. The program, available at all 16 KSP post locations, temporarily paused in April while the agency developed safety protocols in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the Kentucky State Police is pleased to announce that the doors have reopened to assist in the fight against the drug epidemic, with CDC guidelines in place to help mitigate the spread of the virus amongst the public and KSP dispatchers and Troopers. The Angel Initiative is completely voluntary, and individuals will not be arrested or charged with any violations if they agree to participate in treatment. Danielle Perkins, KSP Angel Initiative Program Administrator, says if an individual comes to a KSP post for assistance, they can safely dispose of the drugs or contraband they may have in their possession, without threat of arrest. "The Angel Initiative's mission is to help addicts when they need it the most and fortunately, we can once again welcome those seeking help to our posts," said Perkins. Any individuals seeking help at a KSP post must adhere to the following 'Healthy at Work' safety guidelines. The posts are open to the public Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm local time. Governor: State's vaccine supply to increase by additional 5% By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - On Tuesday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced the federal COVID-19 team will increase Kentucky's vaccine supply by an additional 5%. In total, the state's supply will increase by 22% the week of Feb. 8 compared with the week of Jan. 25. The Governor also noted Tuesday was the fifth day in a row that the state's COVID-19 positivity rate has stayed under 9%. "Here in Kentucky and across the county we are seeing case numbers declining and we want to continue to see that trend," said Gov. Beshear. "Unfortunately, we also continue to see far more deaths than we'd like to. There are 13 individuals in this report who were only in their 50s and 60s when they passed away from this virus. "But there is really good news today, too," said Gov. Beshear. "The president announced that his administration is increasing our supply another 5%. Again, our challenge is supply, supply, supply. Remember, we will get a vaccine to everybody, it's just going to take some time." LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 2/2/2021 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department Today we took appointments for the 700 COVID-19 vaccination slots we had available from the one-time push of vaccine from the state. We had 20 phone lines and several operators taking calls. All the appointment slots were filled in the first 2 and a half hours. In the first hour alone, we had over 50,000 attempted dial-ins. Over the full 2 and a half hours we had 110,000 attempted dial-ins. We apologize for those who could not get though, or for those who got through but were not able to speak to an operator before your call was dropped. In the future, should we get additional vaccine allocated to us, we will try to tweak our queue system so those who do get through will be able to remain on hold until an operator picks up. As the Director of the District Health Department, as you can imagine, my time is and has been of high demand ever since COVID-19 entered our district in March. I can't possibly respond to every email and phone call from people who would like to correspond with me. I post daily all COVID-19 related information via this Daily Brief and have set up a call center at the health department to answer the public's questions. Unfortunately, we added more new cases today than last Tuesday; thus our 7-day average incidence rate went up slightly. All 10 of our counties remain in the "red critical" range of community spread. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.
