Ready for the Great American Bird Count

2021-02-01 - Sano, Adair County, KY - Photo by Jacquelyn Montgomery.
Photographer Jackie Montgomery writes, "What a wonderment to see three different kinds of woodpeckers busy at work in my yard, just before the Great American Bird Count! This red-bellied enjoyed the buffets under the leaves on the ground, in the soft spots of a maple stump and among the mushrooms."

Governor: We are vaccinating people faster than we get doses

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear and other state officials updated Kentuckians on the state's vaccine rollout and announced the state's third straight week of declining cases and its fourth day in a row with a positivity rate below 9%.

"Remember, we are vaccinating people faster than we get doses from the federal government, and if you're having a hard time signing up, it's because there just aren't enough doses. But we are working hard and everybody is going to get their turn," said Gov. Beshear.

For the past four weeks, Kentucky has administered more initial doses than it received from the federal government. The Governor reminded Kentuckians that the state can vaccinate up to 250,000 people per week: the only limiting factor for vaccine distribution is supply.

Mail-in renewal option for expiring driver's licenses expanded

By Naitore Djigbenou

Frankfort, KY - To minimize the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Andy Beshear today announced an extension of a special program for remote renewal of qualifying expired Kentucky driver's license and ID cards. The new official order grants Kentuckians access to renew or replace a driving or identity credential through their Circuit Court Clerk's preferred mail-in or drop method.

The order applies to Kentucky driver's licenses, permits and state-issued identification cards that expired or will expire by June 30, 2021. Applicants who require driver testing performed by Kentucky State Police must successfully complete that step before renewing a credential. Up to now, the cutoff has been a Feb. 28, 2021 expiration date.

ACMS Academic Team Wins Regional Championship

By Brett Reliford

The Adair County Middle School Academic Team made history Saturday, January 30, by becoming the Governor's Cup Regional Champions for Region 11. The competition was the head-to-head battle against District winners from across the Region, and winners at the Region event earned the right to advance to the Governor's Cup State Championships. During the final standings at the awards ceremony, Adair stood as the overall winner in a very competitive Region 11.

From the coach's seat: "As most people have experienced, operating in a virtual learning year has come with challenges, and I cannot say enough about the effort from our competitors that it took to accomplish this year's championship. I have noted this several times in the past about the level of accomplishment that comes with winning a Regional Championship and what that means: having been a part of both Academic Team and sports settings, the jubilation and feeling that we have when we are able to come out on top in any year where the title Regional Champion is earned is very similar in either setting. The off-season work, the August-February week-in and week-out practices that it takes to be able to stay competitive and eventually come out on top is very similar to the level of dedication it takes in any ultra-competitive experience.

I am so proud of the level of achievement for these students, and if you recognize any of the names in the team accomplishments below--if they are a neighbor, a schoolmate, a child of a co-worker, etc.--pass along your congratulations to them. They are a great group of students to be able to work with, and as a coach, my hope is that they are able to feel at least an ounce of the pride in themselves that I feel toward them about their achievements."

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/31/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Governor announced four new sites where vaccines for Phase 1a and 1b, including 70 and older, will be opening. More sites will be opening in the weeks to come. You may call 1-855-598-2246, or visit vaccine.ky.gov to find out if you are eligible and where you can receive the vaccine. Remember, supplies are still limited, it may take several weeks to secure an appointment.

Locally, through a contract with the federal government, Walgreens and CVS pharmacies continue to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff.

The health departments in the Lake Cumberland District may receive a very limited supply of prime/1st dose vaccine next week. As soon as we verify this, we will alert the public about scheduling procedures. We are not keeping a waiting list. We don't plan on keeping any waiting lists unless/until we are assured of a significant and recurring supply of vaccine.

Adair Public Schools on a virtual/snow day

In a 4:36am phone announcement, Superintendent Pamela Stephens announced Adair County Public Schools will be all-virtual today, Monday, February 1, 2021, due to the weather. Busses will not be running on slippery roads.

In years past, this would have been a snow-day, a surprise day off to be made up when the weather improved. However, the pandemic has enabled students, teachers, staff and families to be able to make education happen from all corners thanks to the Internet, no matter the weather outside.

Dr. Stephens reminds everyone to be safe in the snow and back on campus tomorrow.

Most surrounding schools are reporting the same as this is posted - Taylor, Green, Casey and Metcalfe are confirmed. Drive with caution.
