LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/18/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

After several days of no new COVID-19 related deaths, we unfortunately must report 4 new deaths today: a 64-year-old individual from Clinton who had been hospitalized; a 76-year-old individual from Pulaski who had been hospitalized; a 64-year-old individual from Pulaski who had been hospitalized, who had been released from public health observation as no longer contagious, but later succumbed to lasting complications from the illness; and a 63-year-old individual from Wayne who had been hospitalized.

We are glad our cases are still trending downward. Until the vaccine is widely available, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding touching our faces.

COVID-19 Vaccination Status
The Lake Cumberland area will contiue in Phase 1a of our COVID-19 response, but will now also be expanding into 1b, first responders and school staff. Also, do not forget about the federal contract with Walgreens and CVS pharmacies to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff.

We are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases currently, as vaccines are not readily available at the local health departments.

Added to the 500 doses per week Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital will still be receiving, our area is expected to receive COVID-19 vaccine for the Adair, Casey, and Clinton County school staff this week.

ACSO: ID theft case leads to chase, multiple charges

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

In December, the Adair County Sheriff's Office initiated an investigation into the theft of personal identification information such as the social security number and other forms of ID of an Adair County resident.

Over the course of the investigation, deputies were able to work with the credit card company and identify retailers where the card was used. Deputies then were able to get video footage from the retailers and identify the person using the card. A warrant was sworn out for his arrest. However, the suspect didn't have a permanent residence, was staying at multiple places, and was eluding arrest.

On Sunday, January 17, 2021, the Sheriff's Office received information about the suspect's location, and deputies Brandon Hitch, Derek Padgett and Josh Durbin began searching an area 10 miles east of Columbia in the Sano community.

At around 1amCT they approached a residence off Marlo Campbell Road, and as they pulled in, a vehicle fled from the residence. Vehicle pursuit ensued. Deputies were able to bring the pursuit to a safe stop on Free Union Road, close to theRussell County line.

The suspect was arrested on the existing warrants as well as multiple additional charges stemming from the chase.

TJRH: Vaccine Update for seniors age 70 and older

By Stacey Biggs

While we are still waiting to receive the vaccine for those 70 and older, we have plans in place to distribute it quickly and efficiently once it arrives in our hospitals in Glasgow and in Columbia. At this time, we are unsure when it will arrive.

In the meantime, beginning Monday, January 18, 2021, seniors age 70 and older who are in Phase 1B of vaccine distribution may contact T.J. Regional Health to sign up for the vaccine waiting list. Please choose ONLY ONE of the following options to get on the list: Please do not sign up both ways - duplicate entries will only serve to delay the process once we begin calling patients to schedule appointments.

The online form is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The phone line will be open Monday - Friday from 8amCT until 4pmCT until further notice. There is tremendous demand and high volume, so please be patient.

At this time, the waiting listing is for Phase 1B - seniors age 70 and older. Details for Phases 1C and beyond will be announced in the near future as more information becomes available.

History Monday: Did You Know?

By Mike Watson

There are so many things I still learn about our history and our people. Searching is what I tend to do best. There was once a semi-regular column in the Adair County News, in the early 1900s, with the title, Do You Remember?

Here are a handful of my 'Did You Know?' items to ponder on a cold, dreary Monday:

Moonshine Still Raided: Deputy United States Marshall John A. Burton and posse made a raid in Adair County in November 1898. They captured and destroyed a still about two miles from Milltown. It was in operation, but the distillers made their escape. There were, besides the still, about 100 gallons of singlings, which were destroyed.

The 'Old Union' Church, near Gradyville, Adair County, was sold at public auction in 1899, after a new building had been constructed. The old one only brought $45 at auction.

Fair postponed due to small-pox: The Adair County fair of 1899 was advertised to begin on Tuesday, August 22nd, but was postponed until the first week in October on account of small-pox in the upper part of the county and in neighboring Casey County.

Wed in a Cave: A wedding was solemnized in Mammoth Cave yesterday, October 2, 1901. W.C. Yates and Miss Carrie Caldwell, of Adair County, stood at the "bridal alter" and made their vows.

LCDHD: COVID-19 Vaccination Status

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/17/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Lake Cumberland area remains largely in Phase 1a of our COVID-19 response. This includes vaccines for healthcare workers and first responders. Let us also not forget about the federal contract with Walgreens and CVS pharmacies to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff.

We are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases currently, as vaccines are not readily available at the local health departments.

According to the Governor, the next big push of the COVID-19 vaccine will be to vaccinate school faculty and staff. While the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital will still, at least for the near future, be receiving 500 doses per week as a regional COVID-19 Center, much of the remaining supply of vaccine over the next few weeks will likely be tied up with the effort to vaccinate school personnel.

MLK Day: King's speeches evoke spirit and truth

Martin Luther King, Jr.:
Those who knew him grow old; the promise lives

The people who heard Martin Luther King, Jr. speak in person, or live on the television or radio--those people have grown old.

Is time that those old people ask the young: Have you heard his speech? Have you read about Martin Luther King's dream? Did you read his Mountaintop speech?

Any of King's speeches evoke spirit and truth, but one speech shines out for its hopeful and, in retrospect, its chilling words.
