Nominations sought for KY Leopold Conservation Award

Winner will receive $10,000 prize for Conservation Leadership

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles invites Kentuckians to nominate a farmer or forester for the 2021 Kentucky Leopold Conservation Award.

"Contrary to popular perception, farmers are some of our greatest conservationists and stewards of the land," Commissioner Quarles said. "Every year, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture is honored to work with the Sand County Foundation to present the Leopold Conservation Award to a Kentucky farm family who goes above and beyond in the care and management of natural resources. The nominees support our proud tradition of conserving important resources while keeping farmland productive and sustainable."

Nominations may be submitted on behalf of a landowner, or landowners may nominate themselves. The application can be found at sandcountyfoundation.org/uploads/Kentucky-CFN-2019WEB.pdf.

The application deadline date is April 1, 2021. The committee prefers application materials to be sent electronically to colemansteve51@gmail.com.

Kentucky Senate passes HB1, 28-7

The bill, sponsored by Tompkinsville Rep. Bart Rowland, would allow businesses and schools to follow "least-restrictive guidance" to remain open. The Governor has 10 days to sign it, let it become law without his signature or veto it.

By Jim Hannah, LRC

Frankfort, KY - The General Assembly gave final passage today to legislation relating to the reopening of Kentucky's economy in response to the governor's state of emergency intended to stop the spread of COVID-19.

The measure, known as House Bill 1, passed the Senate by a 28-7 vote shortly after it was amended in committee. The House of Representatives went on to concur with the Senate changes.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 1/8/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added a new chart to our main COVID-19 statistics page that shows hospitalizations by age group. Seventy-five percent of our deaths have been in the 70 plus age group, and 50% of our hospitalizations. That is why it is important we get to this population with the vaccine as soon as possible. We are anxious to do this work. Please watch our Daily Brief and social media for breaking news about when vaccine for this population starts flowing into our communities.

New cases continue to be high. So, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update
LCDHD is currently operating in Phase 1a of our COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan. This includes vaccines for healthcare workers and first responders. We are not pre-registering for future vaccination phases at this time, as vaccines are not readily available. Please follow this website and the LCDHD social media sites for details about future vaccine availability once additional vaccine is received. Also, don't forget about the contract with Walgreens and CVS pharmacies to vaccinate the long-term care facilities and personal care homes -- residents and staff.
