Carol Perkins: Happy anniversary Previous Column: Christmas 2020 By Carol Perkins On Christmas Day twenty-three years ago, Guy and I (and a plane of relatives) headed for Belton, Texas for the wedding of our son Jon to Beth Bellick. Jon met his future wife when he did a semester of studies with Centre College in London, and she was there with her school (TCU) as well. They dated for a year or so when they returned, and we knew he would marry his Texas girl and live in Texas. (He always said he wanted to live there.) We were among a few other people on the plane, so the pilot and the flight attendants celebrated with us. (We might have embarrassed the groom-to-be!) Not anticipating the temperature to be coat weather, we weren't exactly prepared for the chill that greeted us, but the cool weather made the atmosphere perfect for a Christmas wedding. With our sack of mistletoe that Jon shot out of a tree, we were ready to roll. We were going to use it as part of the rehearsal dinner decorations, but the venue was completely decorated for Christmas so all we had to do was add a little of this and that. ACSO: Deputy injured after altercation with multiple suspects By Sheriff Josh Brockman Adair County Sheriff's Office On Thursday, December 24, 2020, at 11pmCT, Deputy Sheriff Josh Durbin responded to a residence off Royal Oaks drive 6 miles east of Columbia. The original call was a reported domestic violence incident where a female had been assaulted. Deputy Durbin responded alone, as no other additional units were available in the county. Upon arrival, Durbin began to try and defuse the situation. Once he determined an arrest was necessary, Deputy Durbin attempted to take a male suspect into custody. An altercation broke out between them, and Deputy Durbin deployed his taser. Deputy Durbin stated at that time that he was assaulted by another member of the family. Deputy Durbin stated that he was knocked to ground, and both suspects assaulted him, stating at one point that they were trying to disarm him. Deputy Durbin was able to get one radio transmission out for help, and multiple units, on duty and off duty at home, headed to the scene to assist. Ruby Smith got her son Steve home for Christmas By Linda Waggener "The reunion with my son made our Christmas perfect," said Ruby Smith who was hospitalized on the same day, Halloween 2020, that both she and her son Steve were taken for emergency treatment and diagnosed with COVID-19. Bring Your Bible to Sunday School--Even the Old One By Mike Watson I hope we are all familiar with Sunday School. If not, you have missed a very important part of life and learning. My favorite memories are of Sunday School at Old Concord Methodist, with my weekly fellow-pupils Dennis Grant and Steve Stotts, and the many occasional visitors to a small congregation. Elaine Harvey Bennett was our teacher and she was a jewel in the Crown. There was a time, a century and more ago, when Sunday Schools were organized, lasted for a while, then waned, only to be resurrected at a later date to boom once more. The story that follows was featured in the Glensfork newsletter to the Adair County News, issue of January 5, 1921: "Glensfork and Jamestown Sunday Schools Contest--The fifth Sunday in October, Rev. Quinn, of Jamestown, challenged the Sunday School at this place for a contest, the prize to be a banner. We accepted the challenge and of course Jamestown thought it would be no trouble to win over as small a place as this, but let me say they found some very hard work to do and worst of all, to no avail. The following shows how the two schools went each Sunday during the contest in attendance and Bibles." LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 12/27/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department Last week on Sunday we added 89 new cases, today, 108. However, last Sunday we had 1,110 active cases, this Sunday, 861. On another high note, on both the state and local incident rate map, some of our counties have fallen into the "orange-accelerated" rage of community-spread. Our counties don't match exactly because the state data tends to be a few days behind our data. Also, this good fortune may well be skewed be lower testing levels over the holidays. Unfortunately, our mortality rate is still higher than the state and national mortality rates, and our hospitalizations remain high. We expect to exhaust our supply of our first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines this week and don't have any information as of today when the next shipments might come. Until the vaccine is widely available let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
