Governor: New vaccine dashboard unveiled

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that during the day, several long-term care facilities in the commonwealth began administering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

"Again, our goal is to get everyone in long-term care facilities vaccinated by March 1," said Gov. Beshear. "If we do that, we cut off 66% of the deaths that we have been experiencing. We also reduce hospitalizations and we free up more health care capacity. That means patients who do come in to the hospital get more attention and access and we improve their health outcomes."

The Governor highlighted a Washington Post report that, currently, an American dies from COVID-19 every 33 seconds. The report emphasized the virus' severity across the United States, but recognized Kentucky's unique success in one aspect of the fight against it: Kentucky is the only state in the nation where fewer intensive care unit beds are in use today than were in use three months ago.

Christmas Star

2020-12-21 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Family members were watching the sky in the west from different locations. This is the view from Community Medical in Columbia looking out at New Columbia. Two cousins saw the sky through a telescope. Mitchell in Bowling Green wrote, "Took the telescope out to see the "Christmas Star" and it was amazing. To see Saturn's rings and the moons of Jupiter all at once is a great experience."

Julie in Indianapolis wrote, "We saw the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn! And as we drove home to read the story of the Christmas star that led the wise men to Jesus, we realized that Jeremiah the prophet foretold the birth of Jesus too. What a magical night filled with meaning for us! It reminded us that the God who moves the planets is still (and always) holding us in the palm of his hand."

Adair Ambulance Service board - a thank you

The year 2020 has been a challenging year for service-delivery groups, especially those serving on the front lines in the healthcare field. One such group is Adair County Emergency Medical Services.

The Board charged with oversight of this Staff would like to publicly commend the outstanding service they have rendered during this COVID-19 Pandemic.

They have continuously exposed themselves time and time again on calls/runs where the virus was readily present. Not once has any staff member attempted to shed their responsibilities even knowing the health risk he/she would encounter.

History Monday: A Tale of Christmas Long-Ago

By Mike Watson

There was a time, not so long ago, when we would gather in large groups, kith and kin, check to jowl, and celebrate the season in jolly fashion. Such is not the case this year, but in time we will commune once more. We do not all celebrate in the same way, nor did our ancestors. Here is a little offering of...

A Christmas Fox Chase--A few days before Christmas, in the year 1869, I was notified that there would be a red fox turned loose near Gradyville, this county, on Christmas day, and that everybody was invited to attend and bring with them all the dogs they could muster. I accordingly mounted my horse at 8 o'clock on the appointed morning, and started for the grand rally.

I rode rapidly, for fear of being too late, until I arrived within about two miles of the appointed place; when upon a high hill I stopped and was notified by blasts from at least one hundred horns, trumpets, conchs, and bugles of every size and note that everybody, with his friend, was making one grand rally for the appointed place. I gave them one answering blast from my bugle, put spurs to my horse, and was soon landed, safe and sound, amidst the assembled throng.

I must say in truth, that I was not prepared to meet such a crowd as I there met. I may be a mild guesser at the number of human being there, but I do think there must have been from three to five hundred persons present, besides almost as many dogs consisting of "mongrel, puppy, whelp and hound, and cur of low degree."

Sad word of passing of Blake Martin

By Gale Burris Cowan, Adair County Judge Executive

As I scrolled through Facebook last night and this morning it is evident what kind of person Blake was. He was a friend to EVERYONE!

He was always helping someone. I still can’t wrap my head around it and even though I know we are not supposed to, I still want to ask God Why? Why someone so young and full of life? Why leave those babies without a father?

But I, along with the rest of our close knit community, have to trust in Him and His plan. We have to step up and be there for the family. I changed Blake’s diapers about as much as I did my own kids and I can’t imagine life without him here, but if we look to God and let him comfort us He will see us through.

Prayers for Blake’s family and friends.
