Carol Perkins: A Santa Story

Previous Column: You don't know who is watching

By Carol Perkins

Santa was in a tizzy. He paced around his cozy living room with a fire burning softly in the massive fireplace that threw shadows on the walls. "I can't find my boots!" he yelled to Mrs. Claus who was no stranger to his forgetfulness.

"Check in the closet where I put them last night," she said with a laugh. This Christmas Eve, he was more fidgety than usual. Although his sleigh was loaded, he couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. The toys were finished to perfection and the names on his spreadsheet had been checked off, one by one. What could be wrong?

He found his boots and pulled them on with a little more effort than this time last year. Too many cookies, he thought. His Santa suit hang in the closet, but he would wait until the last minute to put it on because the fur around the collar made him itch, but he would never admit it. After all, Santa wasn't supposed to have allergies.

Governor provides vaccine update, safe winter holidays guidance

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear updated Kentuckians on COVID-19 and said while new cases continue to plateau and the state's positivity rate declines, the commonwealth set a record of newly reported deaths - a result of the state's previous spike in cases.

"Our death report today is by far the most people that we've lost, and remember, that's a reflection of where this virus was about three weeks ago, where it was trending," said Gov. Beshear. "I hope we don't have another day like this, ever. These are 54 families that need our help and compassion and green lights. They also need us to do better."

The state's previous record of 38 deaths was reported Dec. 2. Gov. Beshear took action on Nov. 18 to stop the rampant spread of COVID-19 and save Kentuckians' lives while keeping the economy open.

The Governor announced that more shipments of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines would be arriving in the commonwealth over the next two weeks for front-line health care workers and long-term care employees and residents.

Phillip Coffey: Day of pedicure

MISTAKEN STEP - By Phillip Coffey

Day of my pedicure hath cometh.
Yes men, it is so humiliating.
Kicking, knocking off bricks with left toes
This mistaken step - so not deliberatively.

Talons have formed - needing re-shaping.
Jumping through branches - all breaking
Eating season upon us - totally not dieting.
But top of the list - tis the falling.

COVID-19: Davis family shares personal experience

By Kyle Davis

First and foremost, this virus is absolutely crazy, unpredictable, and insanely hard.

The baby is fine and doing well. Other than a couple of fussy nights and a runny nose she is ok. We can tell she has lost her taste and smell because she is ok with eating peas. She hates peas. There are days that come and go where we know she isn't feeling well. But rest and Tylenol work wonders.

Autumn had a couple of days where she was sore and experienced headaches. She also lost her taste and smell. The thing about that is that we lost our taste and smell in such a quick period of time. I fixed BBQ chicken for supper one night. I tasted the sauce before I put it in the oven. I couldn't taste the sauce when I pulled it out. I couldn't smell it either.

Remembering Miss Nila Jean

By a Russell Countian
Contact information on file

Nila Antle and my brother, only a year apart in age, grew up near each other and "got up" their lessons together in the old Blair school house. My mother, a teenager when Nila was born, loved her dearly and would always say when speaking of her, "She was just the best little thing," high praise from my Mama.

And Miss Nila Jean, as she was known to generations of Russell County school kids, truly was the best, always smiling, always ready to offer a kind word or a helping hand. Her senior profile (Russell Springs High, Class of '45), written by classmate Mildred Kean, eloquently spoke of her essence:
"With a charming personality and a smile as bright as the sun itself to accompany it, she wins friends by the dozens. Nila not only makes friends, but keeps them, for she has the traits which make for a lasting friendship."
I last saw her during a trip to Kentucky in the summer of 2019. We visited for the space of an hour or thereabout, talking of yesterdays and kinfolk long since departed but very much with us during that brief time together, minutes I'll always cherish.

Nila Antle, 92, Jamestown, KY (1928-2020)

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief and Vaccine Update 12/16/2020

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Covid-19 vaccine is arriving in Kentucky! You may have seen images this week of Kentuckians beginning to receive the new COVID vaccine. This is an incredibly exciting and hopeful development. The first vaccine that has been approved for distribution is the Pfizer vaccine.

While we did not receive any of this vaccine in Lake Cumberland in this first shipment, we are anticipating receiving the next approved vaccine (Moderna) possibly within the next week or two. The first doses are expected to be available in very small numbers and will be reserved for health care workers, first responders and long term care residents and staff, initially.

LCDHD is continuing to actively plan for receipt and distribution of vaccine with our community partners. We will certainly be sharing more information VERY soon, but for now, please continue to be patient and stay healthy!

Unfortunately, we added more cases today than we released historic cases. Also, today's new case count is equivalent to last Wednesday's numbers. Let's hope tomorrow is better so we can continue to see the down-turn in cases we have been experiencing so far this week. So please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
