COVID-19 vaccines and hope for our healthy future By Peggy Fudge, Medical Technologist, MT(ASCP), MS Monday, December 14, 2020 -- Today I thank God for the blessings of science and technology - not just for the vaccine received today, but for the work of generations of scientists who saw the potential of vaccinations and were unflagging in their efforts to help humanity. As glad as we are for the relief from covid, we should keep in mind that the incredibly rapid development, testing, and production of this vaccine will foster even more improvements the next time we are in need of a medical miracle. That's the way good science works - it doesn't 'dead end'. There's always a sharp, creative scientist who sees a world of hope and possibilities in a small detail of work already done. I hope one of the benefits to come out of this crisis is a lot of kids pursuing a career in STEM. Imagine all the kids who will say, 'I can do that - I can help!' 2020-12-16 08:45:58 | Comments | Printable version

Prepping for waterfowl season on the water Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Frankfort, KY - Waterfowl hunters often forget they are boaters, too. Failing to keep safe boating in mind while hunting can lead to disastrous results. "A person in distress in the water can be a bad situation in summertime, but in cold weather, due to water temperatures, your danger level is exponentially increased," said Marcus Bowling, boating education coordinator for the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. Life jackets are even more important during this time of year, and should be worn at all times while boating. Personal floatation devices designed for hunters include vests, floatation coats and waist belts. "Manufacturers make a wide variety of life jackets to accommodate hunters and anglers comfortably, so there is no excuse for not wearing it," Bowling said. "Life jackets are proven to save lives. Statistics consistently show that most drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident." Kentucky Fish and Wildlife offers the following tips to help hunters be safer boaters this winter: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-12-16 08:25:53 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Ky Afield Outdoors
Gatton Academy and Craft Academy extend admissions deadline By Elise Swift-Taylor The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science along with The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics announced on Tuesday that their coordinated admissions deadlines will be extended from February 1, 2021, to March 1, 2021. The programs are taking steps to support prospective students in applying for admissions to the academies despite the current pandemic. In addition to extending the deadline, these measures include offering special administrations of the ACT at the academies' host campuses of Morehead State University (Craft Academy) and Western Kentucky University (Gatton Academy). Known as ACT OnCampus (formerly known as the ACT Residual Test), these special testing dates provide prospective students the opportunity to take the ACT exam outside of a national test administration and are less likely to be cancelled or rescheduled. For more information on registering for the ACT OnCampus, prospective students should email the Gatton Academy at www.wku.edu/academy and The Craft Academy at craftacademy@moreheadstate.edu. Extending the admissions deadline allows prospective students more time to request letters of recommendation, request official transcripts, and complete their required essays. LCDHD: 7-day incidence rate is going down LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 12/15/2020 By Amy Tomlinson Lake Cumberland District Health Department While our deaths and hospitalizations remain high, these trends follow on about a 2 to 3-week delay behind new case surges. On the positive, this is our third day of fewer cases than the equivalent day of the previous week. For the first time in a very long time, the 7-day incidence rate is going down in most of our counties. This is not a time to let up, though. If we are at the beginning of a decline, lets all make sure we do our part in not letting this thing get away from us again. So, please, let's all do our part in slowing the spread of COVID-19 by wearing our face coverings, avoiding crowds (especially in confined spaces), social distancing when around others, increasing our hand hygiene, increasing our general sanitation, and by avoiding the touching of our faces.
