LWC Honors Class of 2020 at Virtual Commencement Ceremony By Venus Popplewell Shelby Herchenrader was excited for her family to watch her graduate from college. The first in her family to earn a college degree, they were certain to gather and celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime milestone. "I should have walked the commencement stage in May of 2020, but instead my graduation was postponed until Lindsey Wilson could find a safe way to recognize my class." Lindsey Wilson College commemorated its 111th and 112th commencements with a pre-recorded ceremony (click for video). Graduates from the spring, summer and fall terms of 2020 were invited to take place in LWC's first-ever virtual commencement. The College received nearly 240 student photos to include as part of the video celebration. "My family watched it at the same time from separate locations and they were all calling me at once, super excited and congratulating me," said Herchenrader, a communication and media studies graduate from Louisville, Ky. "My mom was adamant about watching it right when it was posted so it would seem more realistic. I don't think she quite understood that it was a pre-recorded video. And my dad sent me a video of my little brother and sister getting excited when they announced my name." The pre-recorded ceremony, held on Dec. 12, brought together the spring and winter classes of 2020 after the 117-year-old liberal arts college postponed the traditional spring commencement in May. For the spring class, LWC conferred 226 graduate and undergraduate degrees and for the winter class, the College conferred 363 degrees, including five doctoral degrees. Why is Adair Co. Public Library still curbside only? By Lee Ann Jessee If the Governor has lifted restrictions, then why is the library still curbside service only? We want our patrons to know the reasons why we are still curbside at the Adair County Public Library. While the Governor has lifted the restrictions that were added on November 20th and expired December 13th, the restrictions before the November 20th remain in effect. We are still under a state of emergency declared on March 6th and we are still limited to number of staff plus number of patrons in the building. As of today, December 14th, we are allowed to have 50% of our staff in the building but we are encouraged to have any and all staff working remotely if possible. At the Adair County Public Library, that equals three staff members. Please do not compare us to surrounding libraries that may be doing things different than we are. Each library in the Commonwealth of Kentucky takes this very seriously and each library must decide what is best for their staff and their patrons. The "one size fits all" approach does not fit libraries. We have urban libraries, rural libraries, and libraries with two and three teams of staff and libraries with only two or three employees. Why are we not allowing patrons into the building? We are not allowing patrons into the building for a few reasons. One, Adair is still a red county which means COVID is spreading and is considered to be everywhere. Second, due to COVID cases in our staff, we only have two employees that can work entire days right now. We do not want to risk the health of the remaining employees if one them contracts COVID, the other will have to quarantine which means the library will be closed entirely for up to two weeks. Bipartisan coalition of Governors urge safety at holidays By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear today joined Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers in a social media video to encourage everyone across the region to remain safe heading into the holiday season. "This may be the most difficult time yet in our struggle with COVID-19, especially with the holidays approaching. Until the vaccine is available to everyone and until we eradicate this virus once and for all, we must continue working to protect one another," the governors said. "The science is settled: The best way we can protect our front-line workers and slow the spread of this virus is to double down on mask wearing, social distancing, and washing hands frequently. If you are planning to travel or gather with other households for the holidays, we urge you to reconsider. Just one infection can cause an outbreak in your community, which could overwhelm our hospitals and put you and your loved ones at risk. We owe it to the brave men and women serving on the front lines of this pandemic to do our part and be smart this holiday season." Keep state's hungry in mind during season of giving By Sean Southard Frankfort, KY - In this season of giving, Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Ryan Quarles encourages Kentuckians to remember Kentucky food banks and their partners. "In Kentucky, there are nearly 700,000 Kentuckians, including nearly 200,000 children, who struggle with hunger," Quarles said. "That means one in seven adults and one in five children in Kentucky lack access to enough food for a healthy, active lifestyle. If you're able, now may be the perfect time to think about donating to a local food bank." This year's coronavirus pandemic has created an even greater need for food banks and the agencies that support them, as many Kentuckians have found themselves out of work and struggling financially. By either donating money or volunteering time, Kentuckians can make a difference to those struggling to provide food for their tables.
