Governor: Beginning of the end of the pandemic is here

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear celebrated that COVID-19 vaccinations have begun in the commonwealth.

The Governor watched as five doctors and nurses from UofL Health first received the vaccine this morning. Soon after, other health care workers from UofL Health, Baptist Health Lexington and the Medical Center at Bowling Green began receiving inoculations. To learn more, see the full release and these photos (credit: Scotty Perry/Bloomberg) and video (credit: UofL Health).

"Today is the most exciting day that I've had, I think that we as a commonwealth have had, since March 6, when we had our first diagnosed COVID case," said Gov. Beshear. "Today marks the beginning of the end of COVID-19. We are going to defeat this virus in 2021. This is a moment that we have hoped for and prayed for. The effectiveness of this Pfizer vaccine and the Moderna vaccine that's going to follow is nothing short of a modern medical miracle.

"We are so proud of our corporate citizen UPS that is going to supply much of the eastern United States with this vaccine.

Vaccinations begin in Bowling Green, Lexington, and Louisville

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Gov. Andy Beshear and UofL Health officials marked a historic moment in the fight against the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) as the first vaccines shipped to Kentucky were administered this morning at UofL Hospital.

Three Kentucky hospitals--UofL Hospital, Baptist Health Lexington and the Medical Center at Bowling Green--each received 975 doses today and began their vaccination plans.

In Bowling Green, Connie Smith, president and chief executive officer of Med Center Health, said, "In what will forever be remembered as a monumental event in our nation's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Medical Center is honored to have been selected to be one of the first hospitals in Kentucky to receive an allocation of the initial Pfizer vaccine."

She added, "We have seen firsthand the impact of this devastating virus on our patients, physicians and health care workers, as well as the community. Now is not the time to let our guard down. While the arrival of the vaccine is a game-changer in the fight against this pandemic, we recognize that the delivery of subsequent vaccines for the general public will take time over several months. We all must continue to wear a mask, practice proper hygiene and keep socially distant. Let's finish this together!"

Christmas Eve Service (virtual) December 24, 2020

By Doug Beard

The Columbia United Methodist Church invites everyone to join us for a virtual sacred time of worship as the family of God with traditional carols, readings from the Holy Scriptures, a Christmas message, and joining our voices in "Silent Night" by candlelight as we welcome the birth of the Messiah.

Our annual tradition is to celebrate this service together as a "Community of Faith." This year, however, with the global pandemic, we feel this is the safest way to remember the birth of our Lord and with God's blessing, we will assemble again in 2021.

Dr. Weyman, LCDHD Medical Director
Q. Why are there such a wide range of symptoms from respiratory problems to mental issues, nerve problems, lethargy?
A. This requires a very complicated answer but the short of it is – it depends which organs are affected by the virus- for example, just upper airways give you mild symptoms; lower airways cause more severe symptoms. The immune system also plays a part- it can clear the infection quickly or cause a ramping up to the extent that it, itself causes damage.

History Monday: The Old Time Stage Coach

By Mike Watson

[1920]: Before giving a history of this old time vehicle, we will give a little writing of how Columbians received their mail before the stage coach was introduced.

In 1854 the turnpike from Campbellsville to this place [Columbia] was completed, and a short time before that year our mail facilities were very poor and slow. Our mail from Louisville was sent via Elizabethtown, and from that point it came horseback twice a week. A mail once a week came from all the adjoining towns. Soon after we commenced receiving two mails a week via Elizabethtown, a semi-weekly mail was started from Glasgow. We were a very small boy at that time, but we remember the carrier from Glasgow handled the Louisville papers, which he received at Glasgow and peddled along the route between the two towns, and generally reached Columbia with several that he sold upon the Square.

Concerning the mail: James W. Jones, a mail carrier between Elizabethtown and Columbia, Kentucky, has been arrested on a charge of robbing the mail.--Public Ledger, Philadelphia, PA, 16 March 1843.

In olden times nearly all the mail carriers, excepting the one who brought the mail from Glasgow, were kept over nights by Mr. Andrew Russell, the father of the late Judge W.E. Russell. The mail carriers were partial to Columbia, and when a rain came before leaving this place, it is said that they would ride to the first stream and return saying that the creek was not fordable. Their statements were generally accepted and they were permitted to remain here another day, waiting for the stream to run down, as they claimed. On the other hand, it is said when they were coming to this place, finding the streams past fording, they would swim their horses across in order to get here.
