Letter: Stalactites and Stalagmites Matthew Downen writes: It is possible for cave formations like stalactites and stalagmites to wash out of caves, but I would expect them in lower areas like a creek bed or near sinkholes. Myself and some other geologists I reached out to have a few guesses as to what it appears to be based on the shapes:Comments re: Kentucky Color: Stalactites and Stalagmites 2020-12-13 19:03:08 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback

Letter: Before HIPPA Marie Freeman writes: What comes to my mind is a young gentleman by the name of Ryan White. He lived in Kokomo Indiana when I resided in Cicero Indiana. It was the very beginning of the aids epidemic. And obviously before HIPPA. This young gentleman had a bleeding disorder hemophilia. Because of this he had to get a blood transfusion which led to him contracting aids.Comments re: Letter Re: covid cases name disclosure 2020-12-13 10:34:20 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
August 30, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener The article below first appeared in the August 30, 1977 issue of the Adair County News. Topics included Jessie Aaron's mayoral campaign, construction of the new Pizza Hut, Gene Hoots flying the flag at the Rescue Squad building, and a Pulaski County car fire. --Pen By Ed Waggener JESSIE WHO? The other day I asked a political leader if Jessie was really going to run for Mayor of Columbia. Before he could answer, somebody else spoke up and asked, "Jessie who?" The answer, of course, is Jessie Aaron. Mrs. Aaron says she's flattered with the idea, but she's not considering it. "I'll do my civic duty by serving on the jury, if they ask me," Mrs. Aaron said. Shakey's in town? For awhile, motorists on Jamestown Street wondered whether or not the newspapers had the wrong information on the new pizza place. Early Friday morning, the new Pizza Hut sported a big "Shakey's" hand lettered sign. Others wondered whether or not someone at the Pizza Hut's building center in Kansas hadn't lettered it for a prank. But Steve Udden and Dan LeValley, the men working on this phase of construction, say that the mischief had local origins. "Some local kids did it in the night," they said. The sign was covered with black insulating paper by 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning, so Pizza Hut was only momentarily embarrassed by having its rival's name so prominently displayed. Letter Re: covid cases name disclosure Debbie Nobles writes: While I believe Mr Mashburn's question is valid to him, it entails a slippery slope. Disclosure of names in health concerns is, thankfully, prohibited. Were it not, we could well find friends & neighbors ostracized, which (in my mind) conjures up visions of a public posting of names (much like a 10 most wanted posting) or Stars of David sewn onto coats or worse. As I said, a slippery slope.Comments re: Letter: Cases of COVID-19 in Adair County 2020-12-13 06:22:33 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Letters and Reader Feedback
FDA-approved vaccine could arrive in KY early in week By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen Frankfort, KY - On Saturday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced that, with the FDA's approval of the Pfizer vaccine on Friday, Kentucky's first shipment is expected to arrive early in the coming week. He urged Kentuckians to continue wearing masks, washing their hands, social distancing and keeping gatherings small to keep each other safe while the vaccine begins to be distributed. "Late yesterday, the FDA approved Pfizer's vaccine for COVID-19. That's great news, but it will still be some time before everyone can get vaccinated and we have to stay vigilant until that time," said Gov. Beshear. "It is morally imperative that we get the vaccine to the most vulnerable Kentuckians first, and that is why we are starting with our long-term care facilities and front-line health care workers. In the meantime, please keep doing what you know is right: wear your mask, keep your distance from others and don't have large gatherings. Together we can defeat this virus." Case Information As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, Gov. Beshear reported the following COVID-19 numbers: Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2020-12-13 06:20:45 | Comments | Printable version

Hobart and the Christmas present By Phillip Coffey I think the most rewarding Christmas present for me occurred within 'striking distance' of 1970. One of the most interesting people/characters I have ever known in my lifetime was Hobert Keltner. He stood alone in his wooden shingled shelter. Hobert lived about halfway between Keltner and Portland. His farm joined one of Dad's farms -"Foxwaller" ("Foxwallow"). Hobert's house was completely forested for about a hundred yards of it, a great distance in every direction. He feared dogs, fire, and communicable diseases like no other.
